Camping highlight of Scouting programs offered by
local council
Youths
join Scouting for many reasons.
While our Club hears primarily about the Sea Scouts and their efforts to
learn about boating, one of the primary reasons youths join other Scout
programs is for the camping program.
All
Scouts in Skaneateles are members of the Hiawatha Seaway Council, which serves
youths aged 5 to 21 over a geographic district that stretches from Onondaga
County north and east, covering also Oswego, St. Lawrence, Jefferson, and Lewis
counties.
The
Hiawatha Council offers overnight and day camping experiences. Overnight camping is available at two
facilities – Camp Woodland in Constantia and Sabbatis in the North
Country. Camp Woodland is used
primarily for Cub Scouts – boys age 5 to 11 in Kindergarten through 4th
grade. It is located on six acres
and features programs in archery, BB Gun shooting, crafts, swimming and fishing
in Kibbie Lake, and orienteering.
Further
north is the Sabbatis Scout Reservation, which is a 400-acre facility in the
heart of the Adirondacks with access to more than 1 million acres of state land
for hiking and canoeing.
Increasing in popularity is the Adirondack Scout Trek program, also
located at Sabbatis. The program
offers to fully equip those seeking high adventure opportunities with canoes,
tents, food, guides, stoves and fuel.
The
Council also offers a week-long day camp locally at Gillie Lake in
Camillus.
The
cost of the programs ranges from $35 to $200, which some families are unable to
afford. To ensure camping is
available to all scouts, the council offers Camperships which any scout who
demonstrates a need can qualify for.
To qualify, applicants for a campership must perform some type of
service to their community.

DG calls on local clubs to join ‘Pennies for Polio’
campaign
As
many of us recall, earlier this year Rotary International announced a challenge
grant in the amount of $100 million from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
to eradicate polio.
This
year, Rotary International has asked each club to raise $1,000 per year over
the next three years to match the $100 million pledged by the Gates’. Clubs are free to raise the money in
any way they choose.
Locally,
District 7150 has announced a “Pennies for Polio” campaign. Clubs interested in joining the
campaign are encouraged to designate a Pennies for Polio chair. The chair would work with local schools and banks to collect
pennies at various locations throughout the community.
The
Pennies for Polio campaign would kick off in the 3rd or 4th
week of October. The District PR
Chair Bob Stronach will develop a media campaign, including a uniform canister
wrapper to support the initiative
that will be distributed in September and October.
DG
Larry Calabrese will discuss this campaign in greater detail next week. In the interim, for more information,
contact ADG Jim Gascon at 422-1152 or jjg@ccf-law.com.
