Finger Lakes Golf House draws on lush fairways of
Central NY
John Troyan hopes to drive the NYC area to the fairways of
Cayuga County.
John,
who was born and raised in Auburn spent the past 15
years working for trade entertainment publications in New York City. Throughout that time his thoughts never
ventured far from his home town and his favorite golf
course, Highland Park Golf Club in Sennett.
His
increasing desire to move closer to home motivated John and his girlfriend to
purchase a house at adjacent to the 10th Hole tee box. Together, they have created Finger
Lakes Golf House, a boutique bed and breakfast designed to cater specifically
to golfers looking for a weekend golf getaway. John shared his vision for the property at the club’s July
17 meeting.
When
completed, the B&B will have space to accommodate a four-some and will
feature Stay and Play packages at Highland and other local courses. John envisions being able to offer a
menu of options at various courses for golf enthusiast to choose from. John
hopes to draw on the 16 million people who live in and around New York City,
just a short 265 miles away. He
also hopes to draw locals looking for a change of scenery for what he deemed a ‘staycation.’
John’s
enthusiasm for the project was evident as he described himself like a “kid with
a lemonade stand.”
The
property will not be a traditional bed and breakfast, he cautioned. There will be no frilly bedding or
window treatments. Rather, he
described the design as ‘crisp and tight’ with wood and tile floors.
He
declined to provide pictures of the property because, in his words, at the time
of his talk the property looked more like the Finger Lakes Frankenstein House.
John
more than earned his eggs and we wish him all the success as he weans himself
off of the NYC Trade Entertainment publication business.
Images come naturally to lifelong trade magazine
publisher
Creating
exceptional images of the natural world does not require long trips to far off locales.
So
says Tom Dwyer who recently opened Natural Images Gallery in Main Street in
Marcellus.
Tom,
the longtime owner of Pinnacle Publications, a publisher of trade publications
who began taking pictures of the natural world as a hobby about eight years
ago. After years of taking
pictures for his trade magazines, Tom took his first trip to take ‘nature
pictures’ to Baltimore Woods in 2000.
His hobby grew as friends and family suggested he exhibit his pictures
locally.
After
showing his pictures at the Marcellus Library and his former building on State
Fair Boulevard someone suggested he start selling them. At about the same time, Tom was looking
to downsize his publishing business to a smaller location. He rented a storefront in Marcellus,
putting Pinnacle in the back and dedicating the front of the space to Natural
Images Gallery, his new photography business. Not long after, he noticed that customers were staying 30 to
40 minutes to enjoy the photographs.
Earlier
this year, when
space was opening up across the street, a more visible, higher traffic
location, Tom decided to move the business. He started moving in April 1 and in the first month he was
open there, the photo gallery did more business than in the previous 10 months
at the former location.
Natural
Images Gallery has added a frame shop and can offer photos of any size. Tom is also experimenting with new
print methods that can print on canvas, stone and glass.
Tom
continues to operate Pinnacle Publications, which provides targeted, custom
publications for various companies and organizations.
