News & Notes

Mike Wahlrab sails into retirement: ‘I am not a terrorist’

Mike Wahlrab spent ten years getting his boat, and himself ready for retirement.

After selling his business last fall, Mike lived his dream of sailing from Central New York to the Bahamas.

In September, Mike set off down the State Barge Canal on his way to sail in his boat to the Bahamas.  Mike’s boat is well equipped with a wind vane, radar and gps, among other technology.  After passing through the State Barge Canal system, Mike and his crew put the mast on near Catskill, NY.  From there, he sailed down to New York City where he moored for the night.

From Manhattan, Mike stayed in the ocean to Cape May, NJ and hit his first rough patch when he endured heavy storms.  He was grateful that he obtained a HAM radio license, which enabled him to obtain weather reports off shore, where he was out of communication range.

Among the most eventful parts of the journey came in the Fort Lauderdale/Miami area when Mike entered a cruise ship turning basin while a Cruise Ship was turning around.  Shortly after the cruise ship vacated the turn basin, a Coast Guard ship overtook his small craft.  As the Coast Guard approached, Mike noticed a .50 caliber machine gun trained on him.  The officer quickly demanded to know “Are you a Terrorist?”  After explaining the situation to the Coast Guard, Mike learned that for security reasons, since 9/11, ships are not permitted in the turn basin while a cruise ship is turning around.

After meeting up with his wife in Key Biscayne for a few days, Mike set off for the Bahamas, where he explored the many islands, including the Exumas, New Providence and others.  Some of the settlements he visited date back to the 1600s while others feature newer development.

Mike shared the spectacular views of pristine beaches, beachfront communities and many other exciting sites visited as he tooled from island to island.

In mid-May, Mike set sail back to Central New York.   The return trip from Bahamas to Oswego took 30 days.
