News & Notes

ESGR bridges gap between employers, Guard & Reserve

With our nation’s military relying so heavily on  a “volunteer force,” it has become increasingly important to improve employers’ understanding of the role the National Guard and Reserves.

Our own John Paddock is training coordinator for the New York Committee of the Employer Support for the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), an organization created in 1972 to promote cooperation and understanding between civilian employers and military Reserve component members.

Today, 50 percent of our 2.4 million member military is comprised of National Guard and Reserve members, compared to 30 percent of the 4.2 million total military manpower  in the 1980s.

This results in our civilian forces spending more time away from the workplace defending the country both in operations and in training.

John Paddock and the ESGR work to develop community understanding of this role the Guard and Reserves play in the current military through employer support, outreach and providing mediation services between the guardsmen/reserves and their employers.

Another interesting component of the ESGR are boss-lifts, in which employers can have their boss taken up into a KC 135 Stratotanker Aircraft.  The KC 135 provides the core aerial refueling capability for the U.S. Air Force.  During the boss lift, participants are able to witness up close in-air the refueling of F16 Fighter Falcon aircraft.

For more information about the ESGR and how you or your employer can help out contact John Paddock or visit the Web site at www.esgr.mil
