Early Act to Skaneateles:
Do you have clean water?
Do you have clean water? This is the question Skaneateles Early
Acters posed to themselves and the community this year.
Phoebe Glowacki, Max Messie,
Olivia Shephard and Alex Wulff presented the results of their year-long Early Act Project to raise money for
Rotary-sponsored water projects.
They presented to the club a three-minute video produced by Early Acter
Max Messie and distributed a summary of their project written by Olivia
Shephard.
The Early Act program was
initiated through the work of Skaneateles Rotarians our club upon a suggestion
from Ward. Sunrise Rotarian Tom
Seeley and Skaneateles Rotarian Michelle Tarnow contacted Lori Ruhlman, who has
been working with Interact at the High School for several years.
On behalf of the project, Lori
made some contacts at the State Street School which
led eventually to Kelley McQuiggan, who is in charge of the Horizons Program in
the Waterman and State Street schools.
Tom and Kelley met initially in July 2007 to discuss generally whether
this project would be a good fit for the school. I provided to Kelley some information on Early Act culled
from Internet research and e-mail communications with representatives from
other clubs, primarily in the Utica-Rome and Columbus, Ohio areas.
Kelley’s first concern was
adding another fund-raiser to the multitudes emanating from our schools. However, after reviewing the materials,
it became clear that many of the goals of Early Act dovetail with both her
enrichment program and Skaneateles Central Schools’ commencement expectations
of. After more discussions, we
decided to produce a winter carnival similar to the Sophomore Circus during
Winterfest.
The students used their Horizons
time to work on the project, learning about the problems caused by the lack of
clean water for those living in third world countries, said Olivia
Shephard.
Relying on information about the
cost if water projects from our club, they set as a goal raising $600. Alex Wulff spearheaded the effort to
ensure sure the money they raised would serve the largest number of individuals
possible, Kelley said.
The students did a great job,
raising $593 on the day of the event and have since reached their goal through
private donations.
The project piqued the interest
of Chris Briel. She posted the
project summary written by Olivia and the video produced by Max on
Skaneatelestalk.com.
