News & Notes

Sidney Beckwith: educator, leadership trainer extraordinaire

We learned a lot about our newest member Sidney Beckwith last week.  Sidney is an excellent speaker with a very interesting background in education and leadership training.

A Michigan native, Sidney began her career as an educator teaching reading to ages 6-8 in Boston public schools.  At the time, the school was in the process of desegregation such that the minority population changed from 98% to 50% white.

After seven years teaching, Sidney married her current husband, whom she met skiing at Sugarbush Mountain in Vermont.  Her husband is an Auburn native and she moved here in 1976.  That same year, she was hired by the Union Springs school district as director of reading.

At Union Springs, Sidney developed a center for reading designed to ensure all children would be literate before they graduate.  The center taught at the various levels to addresses students’ differing needs and also taught study skills, among other things.

Sidney also served as a principal for Cayuga Elementary School for 7-8 years.

In the early 1990s, Sidney was asked by the superintendent of schools to develop a leadership program.  A survey of Union Springs area businesses  had identified leadership as the single skill students lacked as they departed school and entered the workforce.

Working initially with Wells College, Sidney and our President, Marion Krauter, worked with five other teachers to create Wellsprings Leadership Institute, a leadership camp hosted by Wells College.  The camp educated over 150 kids in its ten (10) years of existence.

We are very lucky to have one with Sidney’s diverse background in the club and I look forward to learning more about her background in the future.

Save the Date: Father’s Day Pancake Breakfast June 15

It’s that time of year when the Skaneateles [evening, with apologies to John Hennessy] Rotary Club is beginning to plan for the annual Father’s Day Pancake Breakfast.

Father’s Day is Sunday June 15.  In the past, we have always helped with set up, during the day and ticket selling in addition to conducting our annual lawnmower raffle.  If you can, please reserve some time on either Friday June 13 or Saturday June 14 from 8 to 10 a.m. for set up, Sunday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. for the breakfast itself.

The evening club has been very supportive of Winterfest and our club and we would like to return the favor so please save the dates and plan to pitch in in whatever manner you can.
