Briel
Computer: You don’t need big $$ to up your Web presence
In today’s increasingly electronic world, having a Web
presence is essential.
According to Chris Briel of Skaneateles Design/Briel
Computer, Web sites are the new Yellow pages with many searching online for
information about a business prior to picking up the phone. Chris joined us for
a cup of coffee and a discussion of her business and the state of the Web on
Valentine’s Day.
Chris and her husband Cary Briel are the owners of Skaneateles
Design, building Web-based solutions specializing in the creation of and/or
integration of content in to Web sites.
The Briels are the founders of Skaneateles Wiki, a Web
site dedicated to cataloging all things Skaneateles in a virtual, Web community. More recently, they created a Web site
titled “Skaneateles Talk” which features “stuff your mother never told you
about Skaneateles.” The blog-style
site features articles of interest about the community, including a nice piece
about Chris’ visit to our club!
The Briels advise every business to increase its Web
presence even if the company does not have a Web site. Having a Web site is as important as
having a business card, Chris says.
And for those not ready to delve into the world of Web sites, Chris
recommends working on your business’ Search Engine Optimization, or SEO.
To boost your SEO, Chris recommends creating a Web site
with “blogging” capabilities. A
blog (shortened from “Web log”) is a Web site where entries are posted on a
regular basis, whether it be daily, weekly or what have you in a reverse
chronological order. The sites
permit reader interaction and are typically focused on a particular topic.
A good example of a successful blog is Skaneateles
Design’s site www.skaneatelestalk.com. The Briels created this blog about five
months ago and now, if you search Skaneateles on Google, their site comes up
within the first few pages.
Chris provided a variety of sites to create a free Blog,
but recommends www.wordpress.com or www.blogger.com. In addition, she recommended businesses register for
free at a variety of sites to increase visibility and increase the company’s
Web presence.
Timeline
– 2002 and 2003 Skaneateles Sunrise Rotary formed, earns charter
In early 2002, the
provisional Skaneateles Sunrise Rotary Club was created. Over the next year and
a half, meeting at Johnny Angels Restaurant, the club grew to 22 members, all
the while performing community service and conducting itself as much as
possible like a “real” Rotary Club.
On June 18, 2003, the
Skaneateles Sunrise Rotary Club received Their charter from Rotary
International. The club was sponsored by the Skaneateles Rotary Club and
their first president was Douglas Hill.
