AG Gascon’s Top Ten tips to help cultivate and grow Membership

Assistant Governor James Gascon offered an excellent presentation Thursday, January 31 on growing and maintaining strong membership numbers. Jim, currently a member of the Marcellus Rotary Club, has been a Rotarian for many years in several different clubs.

In reverse Order, here are Jim’s Top Ten Ways to ensure Strong Membership Retention and Growth:

10.  Take Interest in Each Other.  Be kind to one another and build fellowship.  This way, new members feel like they are gaining new friends.  Also, expect nothing from fellow members, appreciate all that they do and don’t complain about another’s actions or lack of participation.

9.    Run Meetings Well.  Being on time and well run projects to new members.  Make sure you have good programs, particularly on days prospective members attend.

8.     Have a Membership Chair.  Clubs can’t grow if they don’t have at least one person to raise consciousness about membership.  Stated differently, you can’t solve a problem if you are not aware of it.  Jim also suggested having a separate meeting to discuss as a group ways to grow membership.

7.      Have a Party.  Rotary should not be all about work.  It should be fun as well.

6.      Publicity.  Under the old school of Rotary, Rotarians worked quietly behind the scenes.  New members had to be ‘invited’ and women were not allowed in.  That way of thinking is ancient history, Jim said.  The new way of operating encourages Rotarians to get out and let the community know what you are doing through submissions to local media, posters, etc.

5.   Get Involved with the School District.  In Marcellus, the club invited a vice principal to join.  He has brought in five new members, all from the school district.

4.    Make Meetings Enjoyable.  Have fun with each other.  If you do, new members will want to be a part of the group.  As an example, Jim pointed out the friendly ribbing aimed at your Editor for his foibles in helping build his son’s [Cub Scout] Pinewood Derby car and fining members for various but silly infractions.  Jim also suggested some of the things we do during meetings may be more appropriate for a business meeting or assembly.

3.    Become Involved with Youth Exchange.  Youth Exchange is one of the biggest draws for new members with 25% of members having been involved in some way, Jim said.  The Evening Club is the most involved in the district and one of the premiere clubs in the world in terms of Youth Exchange.

2.    Community Involvement.  Winterfest is a perfect example of community involvement, Jim said, because it brings many different organizations together for the same event.  Jim and his family had a great time and supported our crafters.   He suggested for next year that we have one dedicated membership table and solicit the district membership chairs and others to staff the table for the day.

1.     ASK PEOPLE TO JOIN. You have to ask to get people to come to meetings.  Jim acknowledged that this is a tough thing to do b/c most people are shy by nature.  He compared this to asking someone on a date in high school.
