Winterfest
wraps up successfully
Special thanks to all who made this year’s Winterfest a
big success!
Final numbers are still being counted, but total
sponsorship dollars were up, the Craft fair was overbooked and the EarlyAct
Winter Carnival was a huge success.
Meanwhile, the downtown venues reported consistent traffic throughout the day.
John Paddock will provide a full update that will be
summarized in a future edition of The Sunrise, but suffice it to say that
everyone’s hard work made this the most successful Winterfest ever.
Bill
Gates’ $100 million challenge Rotary Foundation Trustee Chair
Robert S. Scott has challenged Rotary Clubs worldwide to make the eradication
of Polio a fund-raising priority over the next three years.
The
challenge was presented to incoming governors at the International Assembly in
San Diego.
“Rotary
promised the children of the world that we would eradicate polio,” Scott said.
“We must not forget our promise.”
Scott
outlined Rotary’s $100 million challenge, a three-year fund-raising goal to
match the $100 million grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation,
awarded in November, to help the fight of polio eradication.
While
tremendous progress has been achieved in eradicating polio since the efforts
began in 1985, it is imperative to finish the job, Scott said.
At
the Assembly Gates Foundation Co-Chair Bill Gates Sr. told the audience via a
video message that Rotary is on the right path to a “stunning
achievement.” Meanwhile, appearing
also via video message, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon further encouraged
Rotarians to continue the global fight to eliminate polio.
“Rotary’s leadership is more critical than ever,” Ban
said.
For more than twenty (20) years, Rotary has led the
private sector in the global effort to rid the world of this crippling disease
through the PolioPlus program.
PolioPlus is recognized worldwide as a model of public-private
cooperation in pursuit of a humanitarian goal. Since the program began, more
than two (2) billion children have received the oral polio vaccine.
To date, 210 countries, territories and areas around the
world are polio free and 134 of these have been certified. As of June 2007, Rotary had committed
more than $633 million to global polio eradication efforts.
