Hennessy
and Vega: good friends for life
When Justin Vega learned that
[incoming Evening Club President] John Hennessy was going to be his Big
Brother, he thought the two would never have anything in common. Ten years later, Justin, 18, of
Camillus, and John remain good friends.
Justin
was raised by a single mother and had been looking for many months for a match
for her son through the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program. At the same time, John had been waiting
almost a year and had started to think that he would never be paired up with
anyone.
The
two are living examples of how good things come to those who wait. They hit it off early on and have
remained close through Justin’s high school years, although they drifted away
from the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program.
Justin is now a freshman at St. Lawrence where he plays
on the football team and plans to major in economics with a minor in
government.

Notes: Building Rotary Awareness, Membership matters
Focus
on Awareness. January is the month that we put
an extra focus on putting Rotary in the public eye with a additional press
releases, maintaining contract with the local media, AND a time
when WE ALL should focus on telling our friends and colleagues about the
good works of Rotary and of our club.
Fitting then that we
are holding our biggest annual event this month! We have much to be proud of and to share, and most
importantly, much to offer potential Rotarians.
RI Challenge: One
new Member Each. With Rotary’s
membership decreasing in North America, Rotary International President has
called for a change in the way we think about membership.
Wilkinson has
challenged every Rotarian to bring in one qualified new member every year.
Statistics show that just 18 percent of Rotarians ever bring in a new member,
which obviously would not be sufficient to sustain long term success for any
organization.
“Each of us must take
it upon ourselves to individually share the gift of membership in Rotary with
one new person this year,” Wilkinson said.
To address this focus
on membership, the District will hold a special District Membership Celebration
from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 26 at the Harts Hill Inn in
Whitesboro. For more information
see the District 7150 Web site @ www.rotarydistrict7150.org.
Timeline
– 1993: Rotary marks 500 million polio immunizations
Since committing to rid the world of polio, Rotary and
its partner agencies, including the World Health Organization, the United
Nations Children’s Fund, the United States Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention, and governments around the world, have immunized 500 million
children against the virus.
At the RI Convention in Melbourne, Australia, Rotary
celebrates this milestone by giving the vaccine to a child from the
Philippines, where Rotary’s first polio immunization took place. A year later,
the Americas is the first WHO region certified as polio free.
