Interact
Update
The Interact Club is having a
break out year at Skaneateles High School.
Alex
Hughes and Dave Labourdette updated our Club on the group’s progress at our
meeting Thursday, January 16, 2008.
The
group started with 25 to 30 students at the beginning of the year with the
goals of completing two community service projects and one international
project. Judging by David and
Alex’s presentation, it appears they have far surpassed their goals.
The
group braved the heavy rain to help clean the evening club’s section of Route
20 on Make a Difference Day.
The
many projects the Club has completed this year include a can drive and adopted
a family through Catholic Charities’ Giving Tree program. Alex reported that they were able to
purchase every item on the family’s wish list.
Most recently, the Interactors have partnered with the
Pride Committee to sell T-shirts raising awareness about the need for peace
throughout the world. The T-shirts
feature a hand showing the peace sign over the continent of Africa. The T-shirts sold out the first
day and the group has raised more than $2,000 so far.
The Interact Club is not finished providing service to
the community, however. They plan
to sponsor a Blood Drive and will participate in the Race for the Cure later in
the school year.
Rotary
announces 2008-2009 Theme: ‘Make Dreams real’
Rotary International
President-elect Dong Kurn Lee urged District Governors to use resources to curb
child mortality at the 2008 International Assembly.
In discussing this
issue, Lee announced the theme for the coming year: “Make Dreams Real” for the
world’s children.
According to Lee,
30,000 children under the age of five die each day from preventable diseases
such as pneumonia, measles and malaria.
He
told incoming governors that Rotary will continue to emphasize water, health
and hunger as it has in recent years but asked to focus these efforts on
children in 2008-2009.
Rotarians
can help improve children’s health around the world in small ways such as
delivering mosquito nets, rehydration salts, vitamins and vaccines, Lee
said. A trained birth attendant, a
simple clinic, a school feeding program are some more examples of simple and
direct ways to help save childrens’ lives.
“Children die not
because nobody can help them, but because too often, nobody does. But you and
I, here in this room, are Rotarians, and helping is what we do best,” he said,
adding that “our job is to Make Dreams Real for children. If every one of us
does this, at the end of our year, we will all have achieved something
wonderful.”
Timeline
– 1989, Rotary welcomes women worldwide
Women begin to officially join Rotary’s ranks worldwide
(though the United States had seen the first women Rotarians in 1986). Rotary
returns to Hungary and Poland, and, in 1990, the Rotary Club of Moscow is
chartered as the first service club in the then-Soviet Union.
Throughout the 1990s, Rotary continues to expand
throughout the world, including Eastern Europe and Asia.
