New
member proposed:
Sidney
Beckwith
Sidney Beckwith has formally
applied for and been proposed for membership in our club by Marion
Krauter. Many of us had a chance
to meet Sydney last year when she attended several of our meetings.
Sidney worked for many years as Administrator of
Special Programs in the Union Springs School District before retiring last year. Sidney founded Wellsprings
Leadership Camp in Union Springs and was recognized nationally for a reading
program she developed in Union Springs schools. Among her many accomplishments, Sidney is also a 1998
graduate of Leadership Cayuga.
The
Board will vote on accepting Sidney’s membership at its January meeting.
Timeline
– 1985, Rotary launches PolioPlus, celebrates 80 years
With membership on
the verge of one million in its 80th year, Rotary launches PolioPlus, a program
to protect children worldwide from the cruel and fatal consequences of polio.
By 1988, Rotarians help raise more than US$247 million
for the effort. Inspired by this commitment, and with Rotary’s encouragement,
the World Health Assembly resolves to eradicate the disease with the goal of
freeing the world of polio by 2005, the Rotary Centennial. PolioPlus becomes
the first and largest internationally coordinated private-sector support of a
public health initiative.
