Winterfest
planning in full gear
Now is the time of year we need to start
gearing up for Winterfest!
John Paddock circulated sponsorship
information last week with a spreadsheet of last year’s sponsors plus
potentials for this year. Club
members are reminded to review the list and volunteer to contact those on the
list. Very few people decline the
invitation to sponsor this excellent event so the more we ask, the more we are
likely to raise.
Remember, sponsorships are our primary source
of fund-raising for the year. The
more money we raise, the more energy we can devote the rest of the year to service
projects and other community activities and the less energy we have to think
about fund-raising.
John also reported that the Community Center
is moving forward with plans to hold a Winter Triathalon at the Community
Center concurrent with Winterfest on Saturday. Matt Major will continue to take the lead on that and
provide further details at a later date.
Rotary
Foundation Feature – PolioPlus Eradication efforts
PolioPlus
- To eradicate
polio, Rotarians have mobilized by the hundreds of thousands. They’re working
to ensure that children are immunized against this crippling disease and that
surveillance is strong despite the poor infrastructure, extreme poverty, and
civil strife of many countries. Since the PolioPlus program’s inception in 1985,
more than two billion children have received the oral polio vaccine.
PolioPlus Grants – Primarily applied for by National
PolioPlus Committee chairs or a major partner agency, such as the World Health
Organization or UNICEF. Support is available for eradication efforts in
polio-endemic, recently endemic, and high-risk countries, including National
Immunization Days, poliovirus transmission monitoring, and other activities.
PolioPlus Partners Grants – Allow Rotarians to
contribute to specific social mobilization and surveillance activities in
polio-endemic countries.
Polio Facts - Decades ago, polio outbreaks were a constant threat
around the world. After the introduction of polio vaccines by Jonas Salk and
Albert Sabin and a steadfast immunization effort, these outbreaks became part
of history in most of the world. Yet many still live under the threat of polio,
which is why Rotary and its global partners are committed to reaching every
child with the vaccine and ending this disease worldwide.
Major gains have been made in the global fight against
polio:
· In the 1980s, 1,000 children were infected by the disease
every day in 125 countries. Today, polio cases have declined by 99 percent,
with fewer than two thousand cases reported in 2006.
· Two billion children
have been immunized, five million have been spared disability, and over 250,000
deaths from polio have been prevented.
Rotary
Timeline – 1946 – book In the Minds of Men published
Rotary International publishes the book In the Minds of
Men, which includes the UNESCO constitution and the first overview of the
organization’s mission. (A 1942 Rotary conference on education and cultural
exchange is credited as setting the stage for the formation of UNESCO.)
In the book’s preface, RI President Richard C. Hedke
writes that the newly formed constitution “parallels the work that Rotary has
been doing through its Fourth Object” and that both UNESCO and Rotary “strive
to advance international peace through the development of mutual understanding
and the creation of goodwill.”
