Ward
talks Vocational Service
As part of Octobers Vocational Service Month,
Ward Vuillemont provided information on how we as a club can focus on
vocational service.
Vocational service is often overlooked as one
of the four avenues of service we as Rotarians strive to perform.
Ward engaged club members in attendance in a
discussion of what vocational service is and how we can incorporate more of it
into our club.
Stated simply, vocational service is where we
as members take our profession into the community as an opportunity for
service. Some examples of this
could include hosting a career day or job shadowing program through the
schools, and/or sharing a list of our membership with the guidance counselors
to provide possible mentoring opportunities to students.
Club members in attendance agreed that the
club has many opportunities to incorporate vocational service into the many
projects we are involved with.
Make a Difference Day
Four club members were joined by evening club
member John Hennessey and Cub Scouts from Den 2 of Pack 161 for the second
annual Charlie Major Trail clean-up Saturday, October 27. The trail clean-up is part of Rotary’s
annual Make a Difference Day held the last Saturday in October.
Those who showed up braved the steady rain to
clear brush and overhanging trees and vines from the trail.
If not for the handy saw work of Dave Cutten,
we might not have made it back to our cars. As we walked back to Crow Hill Road, we were surprised to
find that the heavy rain had caused a tree to fall from the steep embankment
over the trail, blocking our path completely. Dave saved the day, clearing the tree and its many branches
in a matter of minutes.
In addition to Dave, other club members who
participated were Marion Krauter, John Rooney and Tom Seeley. Cub Scouts Tommy Seeley, Matthew
Oliver, Kevin Oliver along with Matthew and Kevin's dad Matt Oliver worked
trash detail, filling a garbage bag with discarded bottles cans and other trash
that had accumulated along the trail.
Rotary
Foundation Month
In
honor of Rotary Foundation month, this November I will feature articles about
the Rotary Foundation. Through Foundation grants and programs, we as Rotarians and
other contributors can help change the world. We can finance a well for a
village that lacks clean water, improve the environment, or provide
scholarships to educate the next generation. The grants and programs available
to Rotarians allow them to realize Rotary’s humanitarian mission, including its
number-one goal of eradicating polio.
Rotary
Timeline – 1945 – Rotary adopts Four-Way Test
World War II had tested Rotary’s hope for peace. However,
through the years of bloodshed, Rotarians continued to assert their commitment
to mend the horrors of war. The establishment of the Rotary Relief Fund to help
war victims and a resolution calling for the “respect for human rights” in 1940
set the stage for Rotary’s increasingly active and prominent role in promoting
world peace.
In a series of meetings between 1943 and 1945, a group of
Rotarians participated in the early formation of the United Nations. At the
1945 UN Charter Conference, Rotary International is given adviser status and
Rotarian observers provide a variety of services at this pivotal meeting,
including translating and settling disputes among delegates.
