News & Notes

Skaneateles Artisans

Skaneateles Artisans co-founder Barbara Gilbert introduced the Club to the newest retail establishment in Skaneateles Thursday, October 18, 2007.

Barbara has been involved with Cazenovia Artisans, a similar organization, for several years.  Along with eight other from Cazenovia, Barbara transformed the former McLaughlin’s space into a gallery selling the wares of thirty-five (35) member artists.  The shop is an artists cooperative, which means it is owned by each of the member artists. The artists pay $160 a month and are obligated to work 20 hours in the store per week.  Ideally, they would like to increase the number of artists to forty-five (45).

Although organized in the same fashion as Cazenovia Artisans, in the four months it has been open, Skaneateles Artisans has already established an identity of its own.  The shop has come up with ideas that were never thought of in the Cazenovia gallery.  The gallery hopes to soon offer art classes and other art-themed programs from the basement space formerly occupied by the shoe store.  In addition, this month the gallery introduced First Friday, an event to focus the community’s attention on artists and artwork in general.

Skaneateles Artisans features works in a variety of mediums, including fiber, glass, jewelry, mosaics, paintings, photography, pottery, wood and furniture, among other things.  The entire store is “re-merchandised” every six weeks so visitors will not tire of seeing the same things over and over again.  For more information, visit the gallery’s Web site at www.skaneatelesartisans.com.

Make a Difference Day

Skaneateles Sunrise Rotarians will participate in Rotary’s annual Make a Difference Day this Saturday, October 27.   Following up on last year’s successful event, we will again perform trail cleanup and maintenance to the Charlie Major Nature Trail.  We will meet at 9 a.m. at the north entrance to the trail on Crow Hill Road.

Participants should bring work gloves, pruning saws and/or hedge clippers and be prepared to work!

Rotary Timeline – 1943 – Rotary adopts Four-Way Test

Since the earliest days of the first clubs, Rotarians have been concerned with promoting high ethical standards in their professional lives. In 1943, Rotary International officially adopts The 4-Way Test, one of the world’s most widely printed and quoted statements of business ethics.

Chicago Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor, who served RI as president in 1954-55, wrote the initial 24-word test when he was asked to help save an aluminum company verging on bankruptcy in the aftermath of the Great Depression. Taylor’s “ethical compass” has since been translated into 100 languages.

“Of the things we think, say or do:  (1) Is it the TRUTH?  (2) Is FAIR to all concerned?  (3) Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?  (4) Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?”
