News & Notes

Fogerty: UPS More than shipping

Our club enjoyed a social gathering with charter member Ralph Edmonds and his wife Joyce Wednesday September 26 at the Country Club.  It was great to hear, both Wednesday and Thursday morning, the Edmonds speak enthusiastically about their life in “The Villages,” a community in Florida which features village living next to acres of “Forever Wild” land.  The Villages, although with a population similar to Camillus, features village centers, and miles of trails open to golf carts, bicycles, and walkers.

The Edmonds are very positive about their new community and the opportunities it offers for service to others.  Of course, the weather is wonderful but it does have a lot of lightning.

The community boasts three Rotary Clubs.  The largest club is the morning club which has over 120 members.  The noon and evening clubs average about 20 members.  The main theme of their clubs is Education.  Although their community is for older people, the public school is a magnet school.  This school is open to anyone employed in their community.  The school has Interact in their high school, a middle school program, and 2 Early Acts in elementary.  The main fund raiser for the rotary is a chili cook-off which brings in $30,000.  There are many Paul Harris Fellows.

The Edmonds also commented on the safety and health in the community. The community has a luxurious hospital built by the developer. Medical assistance is only 4 minutes from any home. There is a neighborhood watch and a sense of caring about each other.

Registration open for 2007 Rotary Day at the United Nations

Rotarians and their guests are invited to attend Rotary Day at the United Nations on November 3 in New York City.

The meeting, from 9:30 a.m. to  4 p.m. at UN Headquarters, will include presentations and panel discussions addressing key humanitarian issues such as water, health, literacy, and hunger. There also will be a separate youth program for high-school age students.

Rotary Timeline – 1919 – Rotary officially adopts corporate logo

Beginning with the Rotary Club of Chicago in 1905, Rotary clubs had used a wheel symbol as an emblem, yet each club had its own variation. Then, in December 1918, the gearwheel was adopted as the official corporate seal.

After “re-engineering” the emblem with a keyway to give it the appearance of a realistic gearwheel, the final design was approved by the Board in a January 1924 meeting. The emblem remains unchanged and continues to identify Rotary clubs and their members in every corner of the world.
