Fogerty:
UPS More than shipping
Mary Jane Fogerty shared her experiences owning and
operating Skaneateles’ UPS Store Thursday, September 20. The store, managed by Mary Jane’s son
Matt, can and has shipped just about anything including Francis McCarthy
pictures, pianos and motor scooters, among others.
Mary Jane decided to open the store after reading that
UPS Stores were among the leading franchises in a business magazine. Prior to opening the store she attended
extensive training courses in San Diego.
Many may not realize that the UPS Store offers more than
just shipping and private mailboxes, however. The store offers a wide variety of document services
including color copying, newsletters, fliers and laminating. The store offers free pick up and a 6%
discount for anyone within the Town of Skaneateles.
Message
from our President
Fund Raising efforts – At the present time, we
are focusing all our efforts on Winterfest. However, we hope to come up
with a new fund-raising project which we can all “buy into” and will give us a
solid return on one day’s effort. There has been some interest in a
coordinating “duck race” locally.
We have heard that these have been very successful in other areas.
Time will tell but the event does sound like it could be fun and should not be
too terribly difficult to coordinate.
Community
Service
– The service committee met at the Parmalee Park with John Hennessey,
Dick Kokosa, John Rooney, Tom Seeley, Paul Frickey and Marion Krauter to
discuss what we might want to attempt to accomplish in reviving the park. After several discussions about park
boundaries that we decided to discuss the project with a builder and an
architect to develop a clearer picture of our options and potential cost.
It is an exciting project but could become quite large. Peter Wiles, of
MidLakes took time from his busy schedule to offer an historical review. One interesting tidbit Peter offered
was that the park was first built as a fishing place for handicapped
fishermen.
I see the beautification of the park as a means of
encouraging a connection between Fennel Street and downtown. It is a
large project with many hurdles. However, its success might also enhance
our fundraising efforts because the park could help the businesses, which we
continually ask for sponsorships.
International
Service—I believe that drivers
may still be needed for the GSE Team in October. Contact Michelle Tarnow of the Evening club if you are
available.
