Wiles pours Syrup tales
Karl Wiles explained the maple syrup process and updated
the club on developments in the industry and at his farm Thursday, August 23,
2007.
Karl,
brother of our president Marion Krauter, owns and operates Cedarvale Maple
Syrup Company on Pleasant Valley Road.
Karl
discussed the present and future states of agriculture in New York State. While dairy is the #1 farm product in
New York followed by fruit, rising property taxes has made it increasingly
difficult to recoup the costs of traditional farming operations. As such, agriculture in New York has
moved to other products such as wine, maple syrup and Christmas trees, among
others. These products enable the
operator to sell directly to the consumer and also create product
differentiation, Karl said.
Cedarvale
is not your father or grandfather’s maple syrup operation. The operation is totally mechanized and
collects sap from over 3,000 tapholes using an elaborate vacuum system
comprised of about 15 miles of plastic tubing. This operation collects about 4% of the tree’s sap. In a good
year they will end up with 3,000 gallons of sap per day. Storage capacity of up to 6,000 gallons
helps them keep up with this pace.
The
wood-fired evaporator also represents many technological advances providing 50%
greater efficiency than those in place 30 years ago.
In
addition to running the maple syrup operations, Karl teaches 12th
grade government and economics and sells Christmas trees.
Welcome Exchange Students
Skaneateles
Rotarians welcomed four exchange students Sunday. The exchange students gathered with Rotarians for a welcome
picnic Sunday evening August 26 at Michelle Tarnow’s house on Lakeview
Circle.
The
students who will be with us for the coming year are: Nico Avalle of Argentina,
who is staying with the Ruhlman family; Sarah Bierbaum of Germany who is
staying with the Swartz family; Lucas Grob of Switzerland, who is staying with
the Frackenpohl family; and Eddy Tasia of Belgium, who is staying with the Naro
family.
We
look forward to spending much more time with them over the course of the new
year!
Rotary
Timeline – 1907
At 16 clubs and 1,800
members, Rotary is rapidly expanding throughout the United States. The
“National Association of Rotary Clubs of America” holds its first convention in
Chicago, where it elects Paul P. Harris president. But this association does
not remain “national” for long; in November, the Rotary Club of Winnipeg,
Manitoba, Canada, forms and within two years becomes the first Rotary club
officially chartered outside of the U.S., transforming Rotary into an
international organization of clubs.
