District Governor Visits

Assistant District Governor Jim Gascon introduced 2007-2008 District Governor Marlene Brown for her first official visit to our at our Thursday, August 16, 2007 meeting.

Ms. Brown hails from Clinton, NY where she was born on the homestead her family has occupied for more than 200 years.  On the professional level, Ms Brown is a former Senior English & Psychology teacher, and Syracuse University Management instructor.  She is the founder/owner of two small companies and author of numerous books, articles and leadership programs.

In 2001 Marlene was 1 of 20 recipients awarded the 1st Central NY Outstanding Women in Business Awards.  She is currently Executive Director of the Children's Museum of History, Natural History, Science and Technology in Utica, NY.

Ms. Brown reminded us that we are part of a global family of Rotarians, all of whom are so similar in so many ways.  She reviewed the many programs of Rotary which offer individuals of all ages an opportunity at local, national and international service, including Early Act, Interact, Rotoract and Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, among others.

She is calling on all groups in the District to achieve Rotary’s goal of netting at least one new member in the coming year so our zone can escape the dubious distinction of having the lowest membership levels in the world.

Welcome Dave Cutten!

A special welcome to Dave Cutten who was inducted to our club Thursday, August 15, 2007.  Dave applied for membership pin our club and his application was accepted by the Board last week.  He has been a Rotarian and member of the Auburn Rotary Club for many years and sought to transfer to our club because his job has made attending Auburn’s lunch meeting difficult.  Dave and his wife Deborah live on Lacy Road in Mandana.

Rotary Timeline – 1907

A simple donation of a horse for a local doctor was Rotary’s first act of community service.  Shortly after, Rotary began its commitment to humanitarian service by coordinating efforts to construct a public lavatory. As the club continues to grow, it widens its scope beyond the professional and social interests of its members; civic service takes a more prominent role in club activities. "In common with my fellow members, I had learned to place emphasis on the giving rather than the getting," Paul P. Harris, Rotary’s founder, would later write. The ideals of Rotary begin to resonate outside Chicago, and by 1908, a second Rotary club in San Francisco, California, USA, is chartered.
