News & Notes

Services for deaf children

Chris Kovar and Erin Donahue provided an informative presentation on services for deaf children in Central New York.

Chris spoke about her organization, Whole Me, which offers programs, activities and events designed to promote successful communication and interaction between deaf/hard of hearing and hearing members of the community.

As Chris explained, the majority of deaf and hard of hearing children in this area attend school at the BOCES facility in Solvay.  The organization works to encourage parents to learn sign language and also looks for opportunities to work within the community creating awareness and ensure that deaf and hard of hearing children and individuals have access to educational, social and community resources.

Erin presented a video about New York’s relay service.  Sponsored by Sprint, the service provides a caption service on the telephone keypad so that deaf and hard of hearing individuals can carry on phone conversations.

Rotary Timeline – 1905

Attorney Paul P. Harris of Chicago, Ill., USA, envisions a new kind of group of professionals to cultivate business ties and develop friendships.  On the evening of 23 February, he invites three friends to a meeting and plants the seeds of the world’ oldest and most prestigious service club organization.

As the club continues to meet and add to its ranks, meetings rotate among members’ offices, and the group begins to call itself the Rotary Club of Chicago.

Although early meeting focused on fostering fellowship, before long, the founders would discover a more profound purpose for their club.  With in a year, the club begins to formulate its basic tenets and principles in the form of a constitution (later the Rotary Platform), which later evolves into the Object of Rotary.
