President’s Message

I am pleased to be the 2007-2008 President of the Skaneateles Sunrise Rotary.  Although I have always preferred a backseat position, I am willing to give Rotary leadership a try.

As a point of interest, some colleagues and I created Wellsprings Leadership Camp on Wells College campus.  The camp was given for 10 years.  It originally focused on women but was soon modified to include both young women and men ages 12 to 18.  Our motto was “Leadership is a Guiding Vision”.  We attempted to teach 7 skills:  Listening, Empathy, Communication, Decision Making/Problem Solving, Conflict Resolution, Creativity, and Risk Taking.  We encouraged the campers to become leaders in their school, community, and workforce.  We were never very successful at fund raising which indicates this must be my weak point!

Since I attempted to teach leadership, applying it seems appropriate!

As the President of Skaneateles Sunrise Rotary, my first goal is to get up and be at the Cedar House by 6:50.  My second goal (besides ending the meetings at 8:00!) is to increase membership.  With the needed assistance from all those who are successful at arriving at our early morning meetings and others who hope to arrive sometime, I hope to continue our increase-of-membership focus by bringing in speakers who enhance our connection with the community.  Another focus will continue to be Club and community service through The Food Pantry, Winterfest, community service projects, and offering assistance to the evening club when asked.

Of course,  fund raising efforts will  continue to support our International Service by sponsoring an Inbound Rotary Exchange Student.  We will continue encouraging the Fire Equipment to be sent to El Salvador as well as supporting any other projects that seem appropriate.

Finger Lakes photo, video business

Those of you who missed last week’s meeting missed an exciting multi-media presentation by Marianne Angelillo.  In a multi-media presentation, Marianne explained how her business has evolved from selling note cards at Pomodoro and the Sherwood to a successful videography and photography venture.

Inspired by the beauty of Skaneateles Lake and the Finger Lakes landscape, Marianne began selling note cards in the village and in Aurora shortly after moving to the area in 1995.  In addition, Marianne found herself snapping dozens of pictures at her kids sporting events.

In 2003, Marianne upgraded to digital photography and later to Macintosh with video.  The latter upgrade led her to begin using Final Cut, the software program used to produce The Sopranos and  television advertisements, among other things.

Using John Paddock’s trusty laptop and projector, Marianne treated us to a sampling of her work, including a sampling of her Finger Lakes photography, a tourism video produced for the Cayuga County Chamber of Commerce and 2006 Skaneateles Varsity Football highlight video.  Marianne’s tourism video can be viewed by visiting either the Skaneateles Chamber of Commerce Web site at www.skaneateles.com and click on Virtual Tour.
