Platoon receives first shipment from Girl Scouts
Adopt-a-Platoon
The
following is a letter from First Lieutenant Nicholas Browning to Girl Scout
Troop leader Alice Purdy:
Things have been
really busy for us over here lately!
We are all getting used to working out in the towns and meeting so many
new people.
I received all of the
packages you sent over the past couple days! We really appreciate all the books you sent and will get
great use out of them. We also
appreciate the valentines! Thank
you to the girl scouts who took the time to make them for us! Our e-mail capabilities over here are
pretty good, but our network is limited.
We can do conference calls and such but only with other people on our
network in Afghanistan.
But e-mail is definitely a great way to get ahold
of us. I am attaching a few
pictures from our adventures over here.
One is of our Platoon Pet “Red Dog.” He has a very original name haha.
We climb a lot of
mountains for conditioning and we have some pretty awesome pictures.
One other picture is
of me at the top of one of the mountains taking a break. It was about a 3 hour
climb with 50-60 pounds of gear! Very, very tiring.
I hope everything is
going well and all the guys in our platoon send there best! Thank you again so so much for the packages! Take Care!
Reva Rollerdrome:
Roller Skating healthy, safe form of exercise
Roller
Skating is one of the best fitness exercises available and is considerably
safer than bicycling, baseball and even basketball.
Mike
Ferro, an Auburn Rotarian who coordinated this year’s GSE Team visit, brought
our club up to speed about his Auburn roller skating
rink and various related businesses at our February 5 meeting.
Once
a hugely popular activity, Reva is now the only
roller skating rink standing between Rochester and Albany. Ferro credits the decline to poor
management of the other facilities and the failure to promote skating as a
sport and fitness activity.
The
average person will burn 350 calories in one hour of vigorous roller skating.
In the same time period, a swimmer would burn 300 calories, a walker 300
calories and a golfer (who walks) 250 calories.
Reva has
been an Auburn institution since 1947 when it was opened near the site of the
current Aldi’s near the Fingerlakes
Mall. Mike began working there in
1979 and bought the facility in 1990.
Today,
Reva offers a variety of skating opportunities for
all ages, including beginning skate and play lessons for toddlers, inline speed
skating teams, and artistic skating programs. Reva also is now able to
offer mobile skating services and has been offering skating at local schools
throughout the region.
