Rotary Fellowships offer chance to expand network of
friends
Local Girl Scouts are doing
their party to support our troops.
Girl Scout Alison Purdy and
members of her troop have volunteered to adopt a Platoon from the 10th
Mountain Division when they are deployed to Iraq later this year. There are seven members of the
troop in grades 5 and 6.
Troop Leader (and mother of
Alison) Alice Purdy visited our meeting Thursday to explain the program and
seek our club’s support of their project.
Under the program, the Girl
Scouts will have a meet and greet with the Platoon before they deploy, likely
in November. After they deploy,
the Girl Scouts will send small care packages periodically most likely on a
monthly basis.
The Scouts are responsible for
the cost of shipping the packages and are seeking community support to help
defray the cost. The Scouts do not
have a firm estimate on the shipping costs yet but expect them to run in the
neighborhood of $50 to $75 per month.
We agreed in principal to
support the Girl Scouts project and will look forward to hearing more from them
as the project moves forward.
Shafer officially inducted as our Club’s newest
member
Mark Shafer was formally
introduced as Skaneateles’ newest Sunrise Rotarian October 2. Mark is Vice President, LCMR Business
Development, with Syracuse Research Corporation. We will look forward to his Classification talk in the
future!

Make A Difference Day to clear Conservation Area East entrance
Members of our group gathered
Saturday for our first work session on this year’s Make
a Difference Day project.
After two years clearing the
Charlie Major Trail, we have shifted our focus back to the Skaneateles
Conservation Area, where we are helping to clear brush for a new parking area
at the western terminus of the Conservation Area.
The Conservation Committee has
cleared trails on the eastern end of the Area off Gully Road. Bridges have been built crossing
wetlands and streams but because of the lack of parking, the trails have not
yet been discovered.
We look forward to a progress
report from Secretary John Paddock, who is organizing the project within
our Club.
