Superintendent:
State of Skaneateles Schools strong
By just about all measures, the Skaneateles
Central School District remains among the cream of the crop in New York
State.
Skaneateles consistently ranks in the top 25 in
the state and the top 1,500 nationwide, making it into the top 500 in the last
year for which rankings were available.
School Superintendent and Skaneateles Rotary Club
member Phil D’Angelo discussed the school rankings and the state of Skaneateles
schools generally at our August 28 meeting.
Among the many accolades the district has received
over the years include national awards of excellence from the U.S. Department
of Education, the New York State Governor’s Award for Excellence, the National
Exemplary Reading Program award, Best in the World Odyssey of the Mind program
and commendation by the American Associaiton of University Women.
Skaneateles schools routinely rank near the top in
all measures of achievement, but below the state average in spending, D’Angelo
said. For example, as of April
2008, Skaneateles’ general education instructional expenditures per pupil total
$7,945, compared to $10,518 per pupil among similar school districts and $9,168
per pupil for all public schools in New York state. For special education students, Skaneateles spends
$20,683 per pupil compared with $26,797 per pupil in similar districts and
$22,354 per pupil statewide.
When evaluating Skaneateles’ traditional high
performance, many in other communities mistakenly write off Skaneateles’s
accomplishments as a product of the community’s perceived affluence, D’Angelo
said.
“You can’t buy test performance,” he said.
As part of its effort to continue improving the
quality of the schools, the district has attempted to bring recently graduated
students back the December after graduation to learn how the district can
better serve its students. One
strength the students have almost universally brought back to the district is
the strength of the library program.
Many Skaneateles alums find that their peers in college look to them to
help them navigate their college libraries, D’Angelo said.
Looking forward, D’Angelo said he would like to
see the district get involved with the International Baccalaureate
program. This would enable the
district to provide a better comparison to districts outside of New York state,
he said.
D’Angelo would also like to see some
of the high school teachers get qualified to teach community college level
courses to that each child could graduate high school with the equivalent of 12
college credits. Students are
increasingly taking longer to graduate from college with
