Club Assembly Sept. 6, 2007

Message from our President:

At our monthly Club Assembly Thursday, we approved the revised District 7150 Bylaws following a brief discussion.  The revised Bylaws will be proposed at the September 28-30, 2007 District Conference.

Those in attendance also discussed the need for additional fund-raising.  As Treasurer Toni Feldman has explained, with our goal of having weekly programs has come the expense of paying for breakfast for the speakers.  We had hoped that [having weekly programs] would increase our membership and attendance.  Toni has done a great job achieving this goal.  However, one member is now not responsible for buying the speaker breakfast a cost now paid for by the club.  This has increased our operating expenses.

We brainstormed several fund-raising ideas including a raffle such as the evening club’s “Queen’s Pot” or a duck race.  Because at the present time members felt that we don’t have enough members to sustain another fundraiser, a motion was introduced and passed to increase the dues by $5.00 per payment  ($10.00 a year).

John Paddock spoke briefly about Winterfest.  He emphasized that there was great enthusiasm for the event.  While we will need to work over the next few months to shore up programs, John reminded the group that the most important thing is to continue seeking sponsorships since that is our primary source of fund-raising for the event and, ultimately, the year.

Rotary Timeline – 1910

At the 1911 convention in Portland, Oregon, USA, Chesley R. Perry, Rotary’s first general secretary, reads a speech containing the phrase “He profits most who serves best.” Later, Rotarians also begin to use the phrase “Service, not self.”

These slogans form the roots of both of the official Rotary mottoes: Service Above Self, and He Profits Most Who Serves Best. The National Rotarian magazine (later, The Rotarian) is launched, with Perry serving as editor. Rotary begins to cross the Atlantic, and within two years there are clubs in Great Britain and Ireland.
