News & Notes

Message from our President:

The next few weeks will be a challenging month for our small club.  Program Chair Toni Feldman has worked hard to schedule many exciting programs for the month of October.  We hope all of our members who are not out of the area will support these presentations by making the effort to attend our morning meetings.  See our list of interesting speakers in the attached newsletter.

October 27th is Make A Difference Day.  Last year we trimmed the Charlie Major Nature Trail.  We might continue this project unless we are able to work on our Service Project, which we are doing with the Evening Club.  The Service Committee is tentatively planning an early morning meeting at the deck park behind Mid-Lakes on Wednesday morning at 7:30.

Seeley and Torrisi discuss career paths

Message from our President:

I would like to thank Tom Seeley and Paul Torrissi for speaking at our club about career paths and their decision to live in Skaneateles.

On August 30th Tom Seeley spoke about his move to New York State that led to his position in Milford, Lynch & Shannon.  Tom graduated from Syracuse with a major in newspaper journalism.   After working for six years in newspaper, the last four at The (Auburn) Citizen, he soon decided that, although he enjoyed working for a newspaper, he would continue the profession of his mother and father and get his law degree.  He applied to Syracuse University and earned his law degree. He soon found a position in Syracuse working at Costello, Cooney & Fearon.

When an opportunity opened up at Milford, Lynch, & Shannon, he pursued it and found himself in downtown Skaneateles practicing law.  This has given him a great professional opportunity.  It has also brought him closer to home on Heifer Road where he lives with his wife, Kara and two children: Tommy, 8  and Jackson, 4.

We are glad he is sharing some of his busy life with the Sunrise Rotary and using his newspaper talents in “The Sunrise” , the newsletter of the Sunrise Rotary Club.

On September 6 Paul Torrisi spoke about his decision to become a Financial Planner at Merrill Lynch.  Paul attended Providence College, assuming that he would continue in his father’s footsteps and enter the field of medicine.

However, he soon realized that his interests were more suited to business.  He obtained a business degree and was employed by Merrill Lynch.  Merrill Lynch appreciated him for his abilities.  When he considered Law School, Merill Lynch encouraged him to stay with their firm and he became a certified financial planner.  He presently has 10 years of experience in the field and handles over 50 million dollars.

Paul grew up on the east side of Syracuse in Manlius but summered in Skaneateles.  He knew he wanted to live in Skaneateles.  He lives in town with his wife Meredith and his 3 children: Jack, age 4, Ellie, age 3, and Kevin, 8 months.    We are glad he is sharing some of his busy life with the Sunrise Rotary and appreciate his efforts.

-- Marion Krauter, President 2007-08

Rotary Timeline – 1916

With World War I raging in Europe, Rotarians from Britain, Canada, and the U.S. donate money to aid relief efforts and care for refugees.  Elsewhere, Rotary continues to thrive. The Rotary Club of Havana, Cuba, is chartered, becoming the first non-English speaking club. Two years later, businessmen in Montevideo, Uruguay, set up the first Rotary club in South America.
