Last Week’s
Program:
Assemblyman Brian Kolb drove from Albany to be with us and arrived
late but gave a well prepared and thought out presentation that included a
correct prediction of Governor Patterson’s pick for Hillary Clinton’s seat;
Albany area Democratic Congresswoman Kristen Gillibrand.
There were also many questions,
comments, rebuttals and suggestions for a better run
state government. Our session was
well attended and most attentive. Fellow
Rotarian Kolb opted to appear at our group Thursday, not part of his
constituency, and had his wife cover for a second engagement in Geneva.
This Week’s
Program:
Bill Conole, being very involved with
“long term” health care at Crouse Hospital will give us a presentation on its
state of wellness in our region and long-term care in this new millennium. This
is something all become closer to with time and so interest unavoidably
increases. Given its expense and
complexities, we might all be mindful of the options and alternatives. Bill is a leader in the field and will
shed some light on the subject I am sure.
Next Week’s
Program:
YE exchange student from Brazil Bruno de Melo
will give us a brief synopsis of his background and country. Bruno has been interested in our
country’s recent elections and perhaps he’ll offer a comparison between
Presidents Obama and Lula.
WinterFest: Tom Seeley,
president of Skaneateles Sunrise Rotary, will likely attend our meeting this
week with a sign up list of times and events that will need to be covered this
Saturday, January 31. As we
discussed last Thursday, a two to three hour commitment per volunteer from our
club should be what Tom needs. Tom
did say that not everyone will be able to man the beer garden and that he may
have enough help there.
Possible
Service Project: One of last week’s
guests, Supervisor Phil Tierney,
suggested we may want to build or participate with designing and building a
western gateway sign that would be able to be viewed from Rt. 20 entering
Skaneateles from the west. He has
given us some artist renderings as suggestions for design departure points. We will need to determine whether we
(SRC) are interested in participating or undertaking the project completely. It could be a good “service project.”
March 12
Assembly and Board Meeting: The
Sherwood Inn will be closed for some renovations. Our meetings will need to be held elsewhere. Some suggestions have been Hilltop,
Joe’s Pasta Garage, Skaneateles Country Club, or perhaps the Mirbeau Inn. Any thoughts and/or suggestions will be welcome.
Upcoming
Events:
WinterFest /
Skaneateles Community Center – Saturday, January 31; 8 A.M. through 4
P.M.
Annual Valentine Dinner / Sherwood Inn –
February 12
February Board and Club Assembly / Sherwood Inn

RI President, John Kenny, unveiled the
Rotary Theme for the 2009-10 Rotary year the International Assembly recently: “The Future of Rotary IS IN YOUR HANDS”
John
Kenny started by talking about the importance of our organization remaining
focused on the core values of Rotary, which are as follows:
Integrity,
fellowship, diversity, service and leadership.
John
feels that the future of Rotary will not be set by
headquarters or the board but it is up to the clubs to determine the
future.
It
is clear to me that John’s theme and focus fit very nicely in what I want to
see from our institute: a focus on our core values and spending a great
deal of time allowing all in attendance to participate and give their view on
where we need to be going and how we need to get there. John has formed a
new “Meetings Committee” which will focus on what is good and what needs to be
changed in the meetings at the international, zone and district level. This
plays well into our institute plans, and one of our own, Past
President, Chuck Keller, will be chairing that committee.
Keep
making dreams real, but get ready because all of the weight of the Rotary world
is now in your hands!
I
thank you all in advance for your commitment to the institute, but more
importantly for your service to Rotary and those in need. This will be
fun!
“Knowledge speaks, but wisdom listens.”
