HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL & HOPES FOR THE BEST OF YEARS IN 2009!

CONGRATULATIONS ON A GREAT 2008.

THANK YOU TO ALL; OUR CLUB BETTERED SOME LONG STANDING ACCOMPLISHMENTS LAST YEAR.

WE SHOULD ALL FEEL VERY GOOD ABOUT THE THINGS WE ARE ACHIEVING.

Of Note:  Marian & Lee Overstrom would be delighted for calls or visits from all of us.  Marian is making improvement with each day.  Lee asks that a visit be prefaced by a phone call.  They are grateful for all the support sent their way and send thanks and gratitude in return.

Suzanne Rutan’s mom, Marilyn Blickensderfer, had a stroke just prior to Christmas, understandably changing the Rutan household’s holiday focus.  Marilyn is doing well.  Doug & Suzanne would appreciate prayers & thoughts.

This Week’s Program:  Board Meeting @ 5 P.M. / Club Assembly (Rotarians only) @ 6:30 P.M.

Tom Seeley, president of the Skaneateles Sunrise Club will be joining us for dinner and then to discuss his club’s WinterFest program later this month.  We provided some “people help” last January and Tom is hopeful we might be willing to help again.

Treasury:  Sue Keefe’s year-end (7.1.08 – 12.31.08) financial information for the SRC is included as an attachment.  Duane Weaver will have a Foundation (SRF) statement at the Assembly meeting.

Skip Plank’s Speakers Program is rolling along in great shape and he will be giving us an update on that.

The nominating committee for the 09-10 officers and directors will have an update, likely from Doug Rutan.

Additionally there will be a board meeting review with all comments, viewpoint and questions welcome.

Benediction & Atonement:  Ralph Jurgensen will provide a 2009 introducing invocation.  For Atonement let’s each contribute for the single best of 2008 we individually experienced (and make Sue a smiling treasurer).

Next Week’s Program:  Exchange Student Presentations, prefaced by Lori Ruhlman.  It should prove to be a fascinating and educational evening.

Club Christmas Dinner / Sherwood Inn:  Another well-attended and festive evening with Dan Roche, leading song in a perfect C.

Dick Poppa provided a highlight presentation and awarded Paul Harris awards to both Ruth and Peter Anderson; her first, his fourth.

Lori Ruhlman was on the receiving end of an unexpected Christmas gift from our three inbound YE students in appreciation of her help and support of them this past year.

In addition to Karen Veverka’s pensive and thoughtful invocation, each exchange student, Miguel, Charolotte, and Bruno in turn also gave a short homeland and country specific holiday grace before dinner, all of which added to our ceremonies.

Christmas Basket Fundraiser / SCC:  This year’s event proved to be the most successful ever.  Headed by Todd & Timer with Robin as master of ceremonies, Jack arranging for seating and ticket sales and committee assists on prizes, club arrangements & donations from Steve & Dale it just was the best $$ net ever.  In addition, …...  the 2008 success could not have been more time appropriate. Again men; great job!

Lastly: Several times a year for whatever reason some of us (and am I sure guilty) forget to show up for our turn at collecting dinner money, selling raffle tickets for the 50 / 50 and making sure the room is ready for us and our meeting.  This responsibility has graciously and quietly been handled mostly by Jim Dorris and Chuck Williams among a very few others.  Bluntly, we need to be cognizant of when it is our turn and be there, or at least positively be sure to get a replacement.  This was never more obvious than at our Holiday Dinner last month.  Thanks very much.                             John Hennessy

This Really was the Season of Giving

Skaneateles Rotarians never cease to amaze me in their generosity and “can do” spirit.  As was reported, this year’s Christmas Basket Dinner was the most successful in years.  I can now report that half way through our Rotary year, we are well on track to achieving our goal for Rotary Foundation contributions.  To date we have received $3,625 in annual fund contributions (including the club’s match of $1,500) so we are at 60.4% of our $6,000 goal.  In addition, we have received $1,625 in contributions for the Polio Plus program, for a total of $5,250 in giving.  CONGRATUALATIONS…and thanks to each of you that have made a contribution.  These dollars are used to help PEOPLE throughout our world.  Weather it is eradicating polio, providing clean drinking water or helping individuals learn to read, Rotary Foundation dollars are put to good use to help humanity.  If you have not yet contributed to the annual fund or polio eradication, please contact Dick Poppa at dpoppa@iiabny.org or 685-3954.  Or you may simply make your check payable to Rotary Foundation and indicate in the memo line “annual” of “polio” and mail it to Dick at 2631 Rickard Road, Skaneateles, NY, 13152.  Thanks for your generosity and Happy New Year!  Dick Poppa
