Syracuse City Rotary drafting Club support for B-ball tourney:  Carol Bildstein of the Syracuse Inner City Rotary Club visited the Skaneateles Sunrise Club this week seeking the clubÕs support for its annual Hoops for Peace basketball tournament.  Hoops for Peace was founded three years ago as part of an effort to improve graduation rates among city youth.  The event partners with Syracuse University and the Hamilton Street Boys & Girls Club.  Boys and Girls ages 11 to 15 are eligible to participate.  Teams compete in games from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday from March 1 and April 5.  The final four games are held at Manley Field House and on April 8, all participants are invited to participate in an end of the year ceremony at Hendricks Chapel.  The Syracuse club is looking for Rotarians to set aside one Saturday to come and cheer on the kids.  For more information, contact Rachel Gazdick at 374-8860 or ragazdic@syr.edu.

FatherÕs Day is Sunday 6/15 so please reserve Friday 6/13 and Saturday 6/14 from 8-10AM for set up, Sunday 7AM-2PM for the breakfast itself and Monday 6/16 from 8-10AM for tear down. Every Rotarian is expected to pitch in so please save these dates.

Rotary Timeline – 2002:  Europe is declared polio-free at the RI Convention in Barcelona, Spain. By the end of the year, only seven countries remain polio endemic. As clubs around the world count down to the Rotary Centennial in 2005, RI zeroes in on the final push to eradicate polio, with the announcement of an US$80 million campaign to help fill a $275 million funding gap.

The first Rotary World Peace Scholarships are awarded for International Studies in peace and conflict resolution.

There are 1.2 million Rotarians in 31,314 Rotary clubs spanning 164 countries. After admitting new clubs from Eastern Europe and Russia in the 1990's, Rotary expands further to Muslim countries by welcoming new clubs in United Arab Emirates and East Timor.

RI Headquarters - The present RI Headquarters building was erected in 1970 as American Plaza by American Hospital Corp. RI HQ moved in 1987 and renamed it as One Rotary Center. The Hall of Honour was dedicated in 1990.

LEAD Technologies Inc. V1.01Rotary International was first headquartered in Chicago, the first Rotary club in 1910, serving 16 clubs. Then known as the "Central Office," it relocated over the years in various rented offices until 1954. In that year, RI moved into a facility built and owned by the association in Chicago's neighboring north suburb of Evanston.

By 1987, however, Rotary had outgrown these quarters and purchased a modern 18-story office building in Evanston, solving its long-term space needs. A mortgage on the building was retired in 1993. RI leases nearly two-thirds of the building to commercial tenants.

Notable attractions for World Headquarters' visitors include the presidentÕs office, the Board room, the Paul Harris room featuring memorabilia of Rotary's founder, and ÒRoom 711Ó a recreation of the room where the first meetings of the Rotary Club of Chicago were held.
