PANCAKE BREAKFAST VOLUNTEER THANK YOU
PICNIC: This year’s picnic will be on September
11 at Lourdes Camp and once again Karen Price and Timer Whittingham
will be chairing the event. All volunteers who worked the breakfast as well as
all Rotarians are invited for a happy hour beginning at 6PM followed by a
chicken dinner at 7PM. As in the
past, Rotarians whose last names begin with the letters A-M are requested to
bring an hors d’oeuvre and those Rotarians with last names N-Z are asked to
bring a dessert. Reservations are
required for a dinner count so a sign up sheet will be circulated at the next
several Rotary meetings. Also,
invitations have been sent out to the many volunteers who are not Rotary family
members and the expectation is that Rotarians will personally invite their
spouses/partners and family members. Timer is in charge of the dinner
count so please RSVP to him if you can’t sign up at a meeting. Lastly,
Rotarians are requested to pay ($12) for their spouses while family member
guests and non-Rotarian volunteer guests are on the club.

ALLISON
SHUMWAY-UPDATE FROM GERMANY:
Hello All,
As most of you know I have been in Germany for the past week and I have been
experiencing many new and exciting things about the German culture.
I have been very lucky in that I am with a great host family that is really
taking great care of me and they always have my best interest at heart. In my
host family I have an older sister who is 21 named Silja.
She will be leaving for school in Munster soon and is currently working an
internship and the local hospital and is training in a premed program. My other
sister is about my age and is attending a different school. Her name is Mirte. She is very interested in field hockey and took me
to one of the practices and I did the best I could to participate in the
drills. As it turns out I'm horrible at hockey but Mirte
say there is some talent there. I don't believe her. She also is a part of a
community orchestra and today I got to listen in on their rehersal.
My host mother Hanne is a lanscape architecht who works out of the house and is an excellent
cook. Since I've been here I have been having very many new and exciting ( not to mention delicious) dishes. My host father Harm is
an orthopedic surgeon and works at the local hospital. He is also originally
from the Netherlans so he and the rest of the family
also speak Dutch.
In my first week in Germany, my host family made sure that I was getting a feel
for my town and German living. My first night we went to a Chinese restraunt where I had my first meal and I was able to order
my meal all on my own in German. After dinner Hanne and Harm pointed out all
the sights of the area close to the restraunt. On my
second day, Silja took me to the school...by bike.
Hanne wanted to make sure that I could ride a bike but I haven't really been on
a bike in about four years so it was good that I got a bit of a refresher
course. When we got to the school Silja gave me a
tour and showed me which teachers were nice and which ones to avoid. Later that
night, Harm and Hanne took me on a bike tour of the entire town and we even went
to a castle and a festival (only for a moment though) on the bike tour. The
following day I had a meeting with the head master of the school and we chose
my courses for the year. For school I am taking: German, English, Music,
Singing, Art History, Math, Catholic Religion, and Literature. For the rest of
the week we just made sure that all my rotary business was in order.
Yesterday was my first day of school. I didn't have to go to my first few
periods of the day so that I could meet with the school's exchange student
advisor who made sure that we knew everything that we need to get through the
week. The first day of school was pretty hard and I didn't understand much of
anything but I made sure to pay close attention to what my teachers were saying
in hope that I may pick up on what the topics were. Today was my second day of
school and things went much much better. Today I was
able to better participate in the class and I am beginning to understand the
language a little better and contribute to the conversation but I'm only able
to answer in English. All of my teachers are really nice (so far) and I am
starting to make friends with some of the kids in my class and everyone is
being so helpful. I am also making friends with the other exchange students here.
I am friends with Alonso from Mexico, Catalina from
Brazil and Emellio from Equador.
There will also be another exchange student coming from Oregon in two weeks as
well.
I hope that all is well back home and that you enjoy the rest of your summer.
Love,
Allison Shumway
USING YOUR WEBSITE AS A ROTARY RESOURCE:
Your Skaneateles Rotary website can be your doorway into the many
resources of the world of Rotary, in addition to a location for club current
and archived information and materials. The home page and the individual
Skaneateles clubs' pages contain not only club information, but quick links to
numerous Rotary and other information centers, i.e., RI, District 7150, RLI,
D7150 YE, eClub, etc. Additionally, there
are many pages set up specifically for those wanting to learn more about;
Rotary Foundation, Interact, Youth Exchange, coming club and district events,
where clubs meet locally and around the world, and more. This site is
linked to the town and other local sites so that it has become a resource to
local folks who what to learn more about Rotary. It is updated weekly to
stay current with our Rotary world. It even has active maps to where our
two clubs meet for our visitors to find us.
Please take a little time to explore this up to date resource, and see where it
takes you. Simply go to: www.skaneatelesrotary.org
Programs are scheduled for both the Sunrise and evening clubs to review the
plethora of information available on, or linked to, the Skaneatelesrotary.org
site. Sept 18th - Skaneateles Sunrise, and Oct. 23rd -
