News and Notices:
THE BEST YEAR OF MY LIFE: Every year on the first Wednesday
in August, about 30 young adults are asked to put into words –
sometimes in the form of poetry,
other times in song – the
events, emotions and accomplishments of an entire year abroad in just
four minutes. Now that I write it,
it even sounds impossible. Yet,
for the most part, the students tell their stories, putting the emotion of this
rollercoaster ride into some form so that people can get a sense of what they
experienced and what it means to them.
On
Wednesday, August 6, 2008, the 2007-08 class of District 7150 Outbound Youth
Exchange Students met with 300 friends, family, Rotarians and interested people
at the Rusty Rail in Canastota to share.
Tales ranged from being in a sauna where the culture required
participants to sit naked and hit each other with birch branches (that was our
own Nick Trapani telling about his experience in Finland), to learning to ski
for the first time in the Alps in France, to the Euro Tour of the European
capitals, to a special Japanese cheer done for one of our students by his
classmates. The most common theme
of the speeches is that they end with: “It was the best year of my life”. It is a quilt made up of all sorts of
stories, personalities, emotions and laughter. Our students; Liz Bush (Thailand), Alex Frackenpohl
(Japan), Nick Trapani (Finland) and Stephanie Zubrowski
(Germany) were among the 29 students to speak at the Welcome Home Dinner and
they did their best to tell about their experiences in this short amount of
time. Many of the experiences will
help them the rest of their lives.
For most, the next few months will also be part of their experience, as
they learn to readapt to being Americans living in this culture, while still
holding onto their host culture from their exchange. Hearing the students speak at the Welcome Home Dinner, it is
apparent that many are struggling with this reentry process.
Rotary
is the most international service organization. And while we have many other international projects and
programs, Youth Exchange is an investment in our youth and our future. From this group there are world leaders
in the making. There are
humanitarians in training. The
experience of seeing how others live and being among them, not as tourists but
as citizens with a vested interest in the host community and host country,
makes a lasting impression on these students. We have seen our past exchange students go on to careers in
the US State Departments, working with other countries on human rights policies
as Fulbright Fellows and Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholars. It is as if the Rotary Youth Exchange
Program is the initiation into bigger and more important international
activities and pursuits. The
evening of speeches by these bright young people gives us a glimpse of what is
possible and what is to come. It
is not to be missed.
So,
put it in your calendar, Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at the Rusty Rail in
Canastota, the 2009 Welcome Home Dinner where you will get a chance to feel
what our students feel and hear the tales of adventure, personal growth and
experience from our students.
