GSE Team to
discuss recent India trip in Baldwinsville April 27 - The outbound Group Study Exchange
team has returned from India!
Reports have indicated that the trip was fantastic and the participants are
eager to share their adventure with Rotarians in District 7150. District
Governor Marlene had asked the area AGÕs to get together and plan joint
meetings for a presentation by the team.
AG Paul Scott has been kind enough to schedule a presentation for area 11
(thatÕs us) at 3 p.m. on April 27th at the Mohegan Manner in Baldwinsville.
All clubs in Area 11 are invited to attend with clubs from AG Paul
ScottÕs area (Oswego area) and AG Tom CollinsÕ area 10 (Auburn area).
Light horsÕ douvres, coffee, tea, soft drinks
and cash bar will be available. The cost is $10 per person.
If you are interested in attending, please let John Shannon know so the event
planners can plan accordingly. For those who canÕt attend, more
presentations will be scheduled throughout the district. Check the District
website for the alternative locations.
Rotary magazines: Getting the word out - April
is Magazine Month, a time to celebrate the global network of RotaryÕs official
magazines, which provide valuable information to 1.2 million Rotarians.
The Rotary World Magazine Press consists of 32
magazines from Africa, the Americas, Asia, Australia, and Europe that inform,
inspire, and entertain in 23 languages. In addition to The Rotarian, RotaryÕs
English-language flagship publication, it offers magazines such as Vida Rotaria (Argentina), Rotary in Bulgaria, and The Rotary-no-Tomo (Japan).
The RI Bylaws require all club members to
subscribe to The Rotarian or a Rotary regional magazine. Rotary leaders,
district governors, and club presidents are encouraged to support magazine
editors in their country or region by submitting story ideas, promoting
readership, encouraging timely subscription payments, and assisting with other
communication efforts.
Look for a new international supplement edition in the
pages of The Rotarian early in the 2008-09 Rotary year. The eight-page
supplement, to be produced for all official Rotary magazines, will highlight
RotaryÕs work on the global stage. Ahmet TŸkel, editor of Rotary Dergisi,
the Turkish magazine, says the special edition represents a step forward. ÒThe
supplement will help promote a unified and global image of the organization,Ó
he notes, Òand show how collaboration of editors from different parts of the
world can help put together a tool for communicating the strength and appeal of
Rotary International.Ó
What do you do with your copy once you have
read it? Some ideas to share it with others might include: give it to a
perspective member or friend, place it in your office magazine rack, or give to
your local library or school. Ward actually recruited a member for a
Mississippi club by leaving Rotary magazines in his condo in Florida. A
renter had a rainy week and ended up working his way through all the other
reading material until he got to the Rotarian. One thing led to another,
he contacted Ward via email, and was tied into a club in his home
town.
Rotary in
Cuba - The first
Rotary club to be organized outside an English-speaking country was established
in Havana, Cuba, 29 April 1916, with 22 charter members. The club was admitted
to Rotary on 1 June 1916.
During 1923, the Rotary Club of Havana celebrated
its seventh anniversary, in what became a very busy year. The club sponsored a
carnival attended by more than 1,500 children, won a prohibition against
bullfighting in Cuba, worked to get the cityÕs water sanitized and properly
purified, and obtained pavement repairs in certain areas.
By the time the RI Convention was held in Havana,
9-14 June 1940, 42 of the 48 clubs that had been chartered in Cuba were still
active. Another 20 clubs would be chartered thereafter, ending with the Rotary
Club of San Cristobal, on 16 October 1957.
Rotary clubs in
Cuba produced four RI directors – Mario Nu–oz
Mesa, 1922-23; Felix Silva Fernandez, 1936-37; Manuel Galigarcia
Hern‡ndez, 1942-43; and Horacio
Navarrete, 1953-54. All clubs in Cuba were terminated
by 31 January 1979.
