Skaneateles
YE Students Share Their Insights – Lori Ruhlman
Last week, Edgar Tasia of Belgium shared a kernel of wisdom during a speech
before the Skaneateles Rotary Club Thursday, March 6. He said that after six
months in his new country he has learned Òthe most important part of life is
not where you come from, but who you are.Ó He talked about how difficult it was
to understand people when he first arrived. ÒPeople talked sooo fast,Ó he
said. His second big observation, he said, Òwas that I was in a movie.
I had the sensation that I was on the other side of the screen.Ó
It was difficult to be in a new country and new village
in the beginning, he said. ÒThen you start to speak with people, and you
start to love these people and this country.Ó
Joining Eddy Tasia were Sarah Bierbaum from
Germany and Lucas Grob from
Switzerland.
Lucas Grob talked about the Òhuge differencesÓ
between his country and the USA. ÒThe USA is 233 times bigger than
Switzerland,Ó he said. ÒEven New York City has more inhabitants than my
country.Ó
Sarah Bierbaum thanked Rotary members
Òfor making it possible for us to be here.Ó She spoke of Germany as being
Òthe heart of Europe.Ó

A Great Article in the Post Standard on
Skaneateles Rotary ClubsÕ YE Program! Many thanks to Lori Ruhlman for getting this article in the press and
to Scott Wisner and Sara Bierbaum for their comments; see the second attachment
with this email for the March 8, 2008 article in the Syracuse Post Standard.
A Message from Bill Boyd, President of the Syracuse Sunrise Rotary Club:
The International Literacy
partnership between Syracuse Sunrise Rotary and Marcellus Rotary of District 7150, and the Rotary Clubs of
Coquimbo and La Serena, Chile, District 4320, has successfully concluded its
third year! Spearheaded by Antonio Herrera, a member of our Club who grew up in
Coquimbo, this effort landed Syracuse Sunrise and District 7150, as well as
District 4320, in the Rotarian Magazine with a wonderful two-page article! This is a great success story; check it
out!
