Skaneateles
Foundation Membership Vote – Immediately following our
regular Thursday, November 29th meeting, our Skaneateles Rotary
Foundation, Inc., recently incorporated with the State of New York, will hold a
vote by the membership to approve the foundationÕs application to the IRS for a
"Not for Profit (501 c 3) Corporation" status. A document of
bylaws has been emailed or mailed to each Skaneateles Rotary Club member. This
will provide an opportunity to become familiar with them in advance of the
vote. Please forward questions to John Hennessy, who will review
them with the other four provisional trustees, Robin Jowaisas, Bill
Stevens, Duane Weaver and Roberta Williams and then respond accordingly.

Dec
6 Christmas Benefit Fund Raiser – This yearÕs annual Christmas Benefit will
be held on December 6 at the Skaneateles Country Club. All proceeds from the event support the
Christmas efforts of the Skaneateles Outreach Program and the local food
pantries. A grand event is planned
by Chairman Todd May who is being capably assisted by Timer Whittingham, Dale
Zabel, Steve Schwartz, Jack Hyatt and Robin Jowaisas. Cocktails and live ÒBig
Band Ò music begin at 6:00 followed by a family style turkey dinner at 7:00 and
table hosts are reminded to bring their carving tools to do honors to the
bird. Just a reminder that the $20
dinner fee only covers the cost of the dinner and that the fund raising results
from participation in the raffle by the Rotarians and guests present. So please letÕs fill those tablesÉno
empty seats allowedÉand please ask your guests to bring a monetary donation for
participation in the raffle. Checks should be made out to ÒThe Skaneateles
Rotary FoundationÓ, the new tax deductable arm of our club. Todd May is happy to answer any
questions and Jack Hyatt is the ticket-master.

Skaneateles
RotaryÕs newest Paul Harris Fellow
- At our Nov. 15th meeting, the
Skaneateles Rotary club inducted Janice Sterling as a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow
for her generous support and contributions to the many projects of the Rotary
Foundation projects around the world. Janice and her late husband, Kirk
(a Rotarian for 18 years) are both Paul Harris Fellows. Contributions to
the Rotary Foundation help build world peace and understanding through itÕs
numerous health, humanitarian and education programs; and most importantly,
these contributions change and save lives.

Rotary
Foundation and Polio Eradication - PolioPlus - As of June 30, 2007, Rotarians
through out the world have mobilized by the hundreds of thousands to ensure
that children are immunized against this crippling disease and the surveillance
is strong, despite the poor infrastructure, extreme poverty, and civil strife
of many countries. Since the
PolioPlus Program's inception in 1985, more than two billion children have
received oral polio vaccine. To
date, 210 countries, territories and areas around the world are polio free and
134 of these have been certified. As
of June 2007, Rotary has committed more than $633 million to global polio
eradication. 2006-07 expenditures:
$23.6. A special thanks go out to all those Rotarians who have
participated and/or contributed to these efforts. Your continued support
is still needed, since this crippling disease is not quite eradicated yet.
November is The Rotary Foundation Month
The
Rotary FoundationÕs Humanitarian Grants Program
á Disaster Recovery – Allows Rotarians to donate money
in response to specific disasters. Funds are distributed to local committees to
support recovery efforts. The program was created in 2005-06, and the
Foundation currently administers four Disaster Recovery accounts: Hurricanes
Stan and Wilma (Guatemala and Mexico), Hurricane Wilma (United States), the
Earthquake in India and Pakistan, and Solidarity in South Asia. Total
contributions to the accounts were $6.4 million.
á District Simplified Grants – Support the service activities of
districts locally and abroad. Since this program began in 2003-04, more than
1,160 grants totaling over US$17 million have been awarded to districts in
almost 60 countries.
á Health, Hunger and Humanity (3-H)
Grants – Fund
large-scale, two- to four-year projects that improve health, alleviate hunger,
or promote human development. Since 1978, more than 280 projects in 75
countries have been funded through The Rotary Foundation at a cost of $74
million.
á Matching Grants – Provide matching funds for the international
service projects of Rotary clubs and districts. Since 1965, more than 24,000
Matching Grant projects in 167 countries have been funded at a cost of more
than $257 million.
á Volunteer Service Grants – Support the international travel
of qualified Rotarians and their spouses to provide a needed service or plan a
necessary project in a community. This program began in 2006-07, and more than
200 projects in over 40 countries have been funded at about $1 million.
The
Rotary FoundationÕs History - In 1917, RI President Arch C. Klumph proposed that an endowment
be set up Òfor the purpose of doing good in the world.Ó In 1928, when the
endowment fund had grown to more than US$5,000, it was renamed The Rotary
Foundation, and it became a distinct entity within Rotary International.
Five
Trustees, including Klumph, were appointed to Òhold, invest, manage, and
administer all of its property . . . as a single trust, for the furtherance of
the purposes of RI.Ó
Two years
later, the Foundation made its first grant of $500 to the International Society
for Crippled Children. The organization, created by Rotarian Edgar F. ÒDaddyÓ
Allen, later grew into the Easter Seals.
The Great
Depression and World War II both impeded the FoundationÕs growth, but the need
for lasting world peace generated great postwar interest in its development.
After RotaryÕs founder, Paul P. Harris, died in 1947, contributions began
pouring into Rotary International, and the Paul Harris Memorial Fund was
created to build the Foundation.
That year,
the first Foundation program – the forerunner of Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial
Scholarships
– was
established. In 1965-66, three new programs were launched: Group
Study Exchange,
Awards for Technical Training, and Grants for Activities in Keeping with the
Objective of The Rotary Foundation, which was later called Matching
Grants.
The Health,
Hunger and Humanity (3-H) Grants program was launched in 1978, and Rotary Volunteers was
created as a part of that program in 1980. PolioPlus was announced in 1984-85, and the
next year brought Rotary
Grants for University Teachers. The first peace forums were held in 1987-88, leading to the Foundation's
peace and conflict studies programs.
Throughout
this time, support of the Foundation grew tremendously. Since the first
donation of $26.50 in 1917, it has received contributions totaling more than $1
billion. More than $70 million was donated in 2003-04 alone. To date, more than
one million individuals have been recognized as Paul
Harris Fellows
– people who have
given $1,000 to the Annual Programs Fund or have had that amount contributed in
their name.
Such
strong support, along with Rotarian involvement worldwide, ensures a secure
future for The Rotary Foundation as it continues its vital work for
international understanding and world peace.
Rotary Timeline – 1946: Rotary
International publishes the book In the Minds of Men, which includes the UNESCO
constitution and the first overview of the organization's mission. (A 1942
Rotary conference on education and cultural exchange is credited as setting the
stage for the formation of UNESCO.) In the book's preface, RI President Richard
C. Hedke writes that the newly formed constitution "parallels the work
that Rotary has been doing through its Fourth Object" and that both UNESCO
and Rotary "strive to advance international peace through the development
of mutual understanding and the creation of goodwill."
