Crazy Week
So it has been a crazy week. One of Kim's
mother's dogs died on Monday. I was home Wednesday with a fever which turned
into a hospital visit because I have pneumonia. Was feeling pretty crappy there
for awhile, but through the wonders of antibiotics I am getting better. So been
home most of the week recovering and still taking it easy. The fever and
headache/cold symptoms are gone, now I just have this wonderful hacking cough as
my lung gets rid of the crap in it. May actually get back to work on Monday.
It feels like a long time since I have been at work for any length, not that I
am really complaining. And I saw this
article about the problems with IT. I agree
that there are a lot of problems with what IT is becoming. I remember when I
started doing software development how it was some fulfilling to make people's
lives easier through some simple code or just creating something that really
amazed people. Now everything I do is about cutting costs, or uptime, or
process to make sure we have complied with whatever crazy rules we have setup.
A lot of talented people are fed up with it at my current company, and are
starting to leave. I am glad that the new positions I am looking at are more
traditional software development. Actually it isn't even the work but the
attitude toward that work. I am looking at companies that the projects I would
be working on are the products that are being sold. The technology is the
business. Sure there is the cost management and reliability aspects, those
aren't bad things, but there is value seen in the technology guys being creative
and build something that is a better product. The work I would be doing is the
business, and the value of those people is clear. And don't get me started on
force ranking.
