On a beautiful "Indian Summer" day in October of 2000, my son-in-law, Ross, invited me to go flying with him. We met at the Provo Airport and climbed aboard a Cessna rented there. Of course, I had my camera along!! I took several photos before the bumpy air in the canyon got to be too much for me and we headed home. |

Above: Cascade Mountain is the south side of Provo Canyon. Heading east, we pass over the eastern borders of Provo and Orem before entering the Canyon. The foothills rise to the Squaw Peak Trail, a popular drive for a great overlook of Utah Valley. |

Above: Looking more directly east we see Cascade Peak, rising to an elevation of 12,000 ft. At this time of year, the bright reds leaves of maples, oak and other trees on lower, flatter elevations accentuate the steep granite cliffs thrusting above. Fir and pine grow above the steepness and an occasional bright golden patch of Quaking Aspen accents the scene. |

Above: Looking to the southwest we see mountain after mountain. Utah Valley and Utah Lake are in the distance, where the mountains and sky almost blend into one another. |

Above: Just past the peak of Cascade, Highway 40 appears. In recent years the highway has been widened to accomodate the increasing traffic through Provo Canyon. After much controversy, it was agreed that every effort must be made to not disrupt the flow of beautiful Provo River, one of the top ten Blue Ribbon fly fisheries. It still flows in its original channel and the road has found passage alongside. The intersection is at popular Vivian Park, and the side road continues through the South Fork of the canyon. |

Above: At the north end of the Canyon the road crosses Deer Creek Dam then continues along the east side of Deer Creek Lake on its way to beautiful, alpine Wasatch Valley. The dam was built in the 1930's and was considered to be an engineering marvel in its time. Deer Creek Lake provides water to Salt Lake City, just over the mountains to the left (west). |
