My LEWIS Ancestors' Homes

Cefn Coed y Cymer, Vaynor Parish, Breconshire

Directly across the street from Hen Dy Cwrdd is a row of houses numbered 1 to 4, Old Chapel Road.

4 Old Chapel Road

Above: Number 4 Old Chapel Road is listed in the 1881 census as the residence of David and Elizabeth LEWIS, my great great grandparents (a different line from EDWARDS on the previous page). Also listed as living here was my grandfather, William LEWIS, who was raised by his grandparents. He would have been 19 years old at the time and serving with the Royal Navy.

The current owner of the house graciously invited us inside for a brief visit. We found ourselves inside a cozy two-up, two-down residence commonly built for miners during the 19th century. The steep stairs to the upper bedrooms were hidden behind a side wall of the compact living room, and a warm kitchen was directly behind the back wall. As a special unexpected bonus of the visit we were treated to seeing and handling the original deeds of the property, written on parchment, signed and sealed with wax!! As expected, my ancestors were not listed as owners but were renters instead.

1 Old Chapel Road

Above: Number 1 Old Chapel Road is barely visible at the far left of this photo. According to her death record, Gwenllian LEWIS, the mother of William LEWIS, was living at this address when she died in 1902. (I didn't have this information when I took these photos.)

81 High Street

Above: Around the corner and a few houses down is 81 High Street. (This view is the side entrance.) It is listed in the 1881 and 1891 censuses as the home of Gwenllian LEWIS, her husband Thomas LEWIS, and their children Thomas, Howell, and Martha. (William's father was Thomas PARRY.) In the 1891 census, Gwen's brother, John LEWIS, and his sons, David and Dan, were also living at this address.

On a subsequent visit to Wales (in 2002), I learned that William LEWIS' future wife, Margaret THOMAS, was living just a short walk from here. You're invited to see where the THOMAS home was by turning to page three.
