Email Responses to "The Case for a New LC Macintosh"
Apr 14, 2003:
I wish Apple would make a new LC III-type computer. It was really a good package when it came out. My Dad bought one in early in 1994. It was always a snappy, dependable computer. When we first got on the Internet in 1995 with a 28K modem, it worked great. From what I could tell, it was one of the first really affordable, solid Mac computers. It was fast, upgradeable and had color! The other cheap Macs were slow, compromised designs. The premium Macs out at that time were incredibly expensive compared to the cheap PeeCees sold at Wal-Mart. I never really liked the compact Macs. The Color Classic had that impossible to use, tiny monitor, and those cheap Classic II's were useless. When I think back at using the LC III, I have only positive memories. Keep up the good work. Macs Rule!

I totally disagree with your view on cloners. Why should we have to pay more money than PC users? Apple makes huge profits off the backs of Mac users. I think that if they can't hack it as a hardware maker than maybe they should become a software company. I have used clone systems before and I couldn't tell the difference. They work the same and cost half the price. Maybe you think that Apple should be snob company. Their elitist attitude is going to come back to haunt them again someday. Good article but misguided.

From our first email conversation: "If you feel strongly enough about the cloning issue, by all means write us a point-by-point piece tearing apart the article. We'll post it and give you the credit you deserve for your efforts." John Ward
Thanks. I may give it a shot BUT not to "tear apart" your article. If I could sum up what I think is rankling the faithful it is that the Mac has always been priced at a premium with the return that Apple will select for the customer the best components and construction to go along with the extraordinary interface. Look at something like the 9600 machine: the overall build quality, the power supply and all the connectors, the drive sleds and shields, the side fan over the PCI slots, and on and on, just superb. I am writing on a 7500 machine right now.
BUT, now I am not so sure. I am willing to go along with Firewire, it works beautifully in OS X, but I am not convinced that ATA drives are really up to snuff and I doubt we will see what I would call "native Firewire" drives. I think the USB mouse and keyboard is a mistake; heat
sinks on the latest processors as big AS a kitchen sink; not paying attention to the noise issues; I really like the iMac LCD design but the ones I've seen in the flesh at CompUSA still have that off-kilter screen, it just isn't horizontal and can't be adjusted to be so.
I do hope Apple can really engineer the next generation computer with more modern bus, memory and processor and not just "dribble" out the existing platform as long as possible while concentrating on consumer goods like the iPod and the software. I have spent about $300 on OS X (Beta, 10, 10.1 upgrade CD, 10.2, 10.2.3/4/4 upgrade CDs). I don't think the average consumer would. I still think Apple needs an OX X Lite version.
Lots of late night thoughts, keep up the provocative articles,
Regards,
David S.
