The story takes place in a beautiful pavilion in 1930's Suzhou. Jade is a famous songstress courtesan, marrying into the noble house. With melodies originating from Kunshan, Jiangsu Province, Kunqu opera is a highly acclaimed traditional performing art of china which features exquisite songs and presentations. The film was shot on location in a world-heritage classic garden in Suzhou which gave approval for film making for the very first time. The film depicts the fates and friendship of two women, one of them a Kunqu opera singer. Marrying into a rich family, she develops a dubious relationship with a female cousin of the family.
