Kentaro Otani's "Yaku Sanju no Uso
(30 Lies or So)" is a wry romantic comedy reminiscent of Donald
E. Westlake's "The Hot Rock." A gang of swindlers pull
off a successful job, but misplace their loot while riding together
on their midnight getaway train (if you've ever been in Tokyo traffic,
this is not as ridiculous as it sounds). Based on a play by Hideo
Tsuchiya, the film retains the claustrophobic atmosphere of the
stage piece. Starring Kippei Shiina ("Calmi cuori Appassionati
[Between Calm and Passion]," "Spy Sorge") as the
gang leader with singer/actress Miki Nakatani ("The Ring,"
"Spiral") his romantic interest, who also betrayed him
on their last caper. Satoshi Tsumabuki ("Water Boys")
and Seiichi Tanabe ("Hush," "Gege") also star. |
