New York Ghetto Fishmarket 1903

  Directed by Ken Jacobs

US 1992 / Performance / Avant-Garde / Experiment / Color / 132 min / Dolby 2.0/ 1.33:1 Aspect Ratio / NTSC / English Language

Like his deconstructionist work Tom Tom the Piper's Son, New York avant-garde filmmaker Ken Jacobs has once again taken a piece or early, primitive cinema, in this case Edison's New York City Ghetto Fish Market (1903), and revived it through a process of self-revelation. Poring over every frame of this two-minute short with digital software, Jacobs uncovers magical details in the footage and reinvigorates it with the help of musician and vocalist Catherine Jauniaux and cellist Tom Cora. One of Jacobs' masterworks, originally created as a Nervous System live performance in 1993, and sponsored by the avante-garde record label Tzadik in their Radical Jewish Culture series.
