As he lies on his deathbed, famous filmmaker Suresh (Guru Dutt) recalls the major moments in his life. Particularly, he recalls the moment he cast a young unknown girl Shanti (Waheeda Rehman) in one of his most successful movies. Shanti becomes a great star, and rumours circulate about her relationship with Suresh, but when she hears of the director's daughter's sincere hope for a reunion between her parents, she withdraws from the limelight and goes to become a teacher in a small village school. Suresh is devastated by her departure, begins drinking, and his career inevitably goes into decline. Some years later he is given a chance to direct again, but only if the film stars Shanti....
