Abandoned by his friends and colleagues
after his fast-lane lifestyle leads to cirrhosis of the liver, a
reckless young business owner retreats to a countryside sanatorium
in director Hur Jin-Ho's entry into the 2007 Toronto International
Film Festival. Young-su (Hwang Jung-min) is constantly out drinking
and clubbing until the small hours of the morning. When Young-su
falls ill as a result of his constant hard partying, the hastiness
with which his many friends and lovers depart from his life quickly
makes him realize just how shallow his relationships have become.
Upon arriving at the countryside sanatorium for his convalescence,
the ailing businessman begins to develop feelings for pretty fellow
patient Eun-hee (Lim Soo-jung). Recently diagnosed with a critical
lung disease, Eun-hee views every day above ground as a gift and
never lets her inner agony rise to the surface. Eun-lee struggles
to maintain her health by sticking to a strict daily regiment of
open-air exercise and chores while existing on a healthful diet.
At first Young-su flirts playfully with Eun-hee strictly out of
habit, but eventually something unusual happens. As Young-su and
Eun-hee gradually get to know one another, the ailing playboy realizes
that his attraction to the eternally optimistic Eun-hee has grown
beyond the physical into something much more substantial. |
