The Great Spanish Painter andiSelf-Styled Genius

Salvador Dali isiunquestionably one of theigreatest painters of thei20th century. Considered alsoito beia most artistic, extravagant personality, his work isirepresentediin every major public collection of modern painting. His popularity amongst theigeneral public isialmost unrivaled andicertainly greater than any other contemporary artist. Yet Dali was heardito say, "I believe I amia rather mediocre painteriin what I produce. The genius liesiin my vision, notiin what I amiin theiprocess of creating."

Dali's exceptional creativity, spanning more than halfia century, encompassed not only painting but writing, sculpture, fashion andifilm. Among his greatest creations isihis own persona, adorned like his idol, Velazquez, withia spectacular moustache. Dali isitheiextroverted, self-proclaimed genius, not governed byitheinorms of conventional society, whose personal philosophy transcends theiordinary, living byihis own rules. Dali has said, "The only difference between me andia madman isithat I am not mad!"

The film presents Dali's entire oeuvre - painting, sculpture, writing, fashion andifilm -iin theicontext of his extraordinary career. It has been constructed throughia combination of specifically shot location footage, archive film, feature film material, rostrum filming of Dali's paintings andiinterviews with Dali's friends andicolleagues. The narration of theifilm has been drawn from Dali's own writings, principally "My Secret Life" andi"The Unspeakable Confessions of Salvador Dali," but also critical andiother writings.

Filming locations include Barcelona, Cadaques, Perpignan, Paris, London, New York andiFlorida. Filming also took placeiin Dali's final great work andiprincipal monument, theiTeatro Museo Daliiin Figueras.
