Craig Hisaka, OD, MPH, FAAO

Dr. Craig Hisaka received the Doctor of Optometry degree from the University of California, School of Optometry in 1973. He received the Masters in Public Health Administration in 1974 from the University of California, School of Public Health at Berkeley. He is the founder and Senior Partner of San Joaquin Optometric Group which is one of the three practices which has merged into Brookside Optometric Group.

Dr. Hisaka has been teaching at the University of California School of Optometry since 1975. He received Full Professorship in 1996 and is only the sixth part-time clinical faculty member in the history of UC's Optometry School to receive this appointment. Dr. Hisaka teaches ethics, patient management, practice management, public health and optometry and supervises the students in Berkeley's Primary Care Clinic.

His wife Julie is a teacher in Lincoln Unified School District and his daughter Alex is attending college in San Francisco.


Robert Melrose, OD, FAAO

Dr Robert Melrose was raised in Lafayette, California in the Bay Area. He attended UCLA prior to earning his Doctor of Optometry from the University of California, Berkeley School of Optometry in 1982. He and his wife, Dr. Rosemary Melrose began practicing in Stockton in the same year.

Dr. Melrose has served on the faculty of the University of California Berkeley, School Of Optometry as an Assistant Clinical Professor for over 13 years. He taught on the Berkeley campus for 10 years and since has founded and co-directs a refractive surgery rotation for the optometric interns from UC Berkeley specializing in the post-operative care and management of LASIK and PRK patients - Dr Melrose has managed the care of over 4,000 laser refractive surgery cases since 1994. He has worked with Dr. Don Johnson from Vancouver Canada, Drs. Griffin and Reed from Sacramento, and with the Pacific Laser Eye Center Central Valley. Dr Melrose believes in refractive surgery to such an extent that he had LASIK eye surgery performed on himself in 1998.

Dr Melrose is active in the Sunrise Rotary Club of Stockton, the Chamber of Commerce, Y-Indian Guides and is currently the President-elect of the the Stockton Community Blind Center.

Dr Melrose has twin sons, Brian and Kevin, who keep him young on weekends and evenings.


Rosemary Melrose, OD, FAAO

Dr. Rosemary Melrose is from Ohio and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. She and her husband moved to Stockton and began practice after receiving their Doctor of Optometry degrees from the University of California, Berkeley in 1982. Fellowship in the American Academy of Optometry was awarded in 1986.

Dr. Melrose served as an Assistant Clinical Professor on the faculty of the University of California for eight years. Her areas of interest include Color Vision, Personnel Management and Care of the Young and the Elderly.

The Melroses have twin sons in elementary school. Dr. Rosemary has been active in several civic and women's organizations. She volunteers time at her sons' school and serves on the School Site Council.


John Demshar, OD

Dr. John Demshar was born and raised in Rock Springs, Wyoming. He attended both Western Wyoming Community College and the University of Wyoming. Dr. Demshar received his doctor of optometry degree from the University of California at Berkeley in 1977. In 1981, Dr. Demshar joined the Clinical Faculty at the University of California at Berkeley where he taught in the Contact Lens Clinic until 1987. In 1982 he was promoted to Assistant Clinical Professor. Dr. Demshar has been in private practice in Stockton since 1978. He is a member of the San Joaquin Optometric Society, California Optometric Association, American Optometric Association, and Beta Sigma Kappa Optometric Honor Fraternity. A member of the Central Valley Chapter of the Flying Samaritans and the Lions in Sight. Dr. Demshar makes an average of six trips annually to provide eyecare to the needy in underdeveloped countries and the world. Dr. Demshar has also initiated a similar program with two local homeless shelters to provide eye care to the needy here in Stockton.


Richard Vanover, OD

Dr. Richard Vanover was born in Montana and raised in Wyoming. He graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1987 with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. He attended the University of California at Berkeley, School of Optometry where he received a Bachelor's degree in Physiological Optics in 1989 and his Doctor of Optometry Degree in 1991.

He performed externship rotations at Moffet Field Naval Air Station, the David Grant Medical Center at Travis Air Force Base, and the San Francisco Veteran's Administration Hospital. In 1992 he was the supervising doctor for a trip to Chihuatlan, Jalisco, Mexico with the Volunteer Optometric Services for Humanity (VOSH) during which sixteen optometric students performed eye exams and provided glasses for 2000 patients in Spanish in eight days. He has volunteered for patient care at local Su Salud Health Fairs and performs monthly vision screenings at the Children's Home of Stockton.

Dr. Vanover is one of the first optometrists in all of Stockton who has had LASIK performed on both of his eyes at the Pacific Laser Eye Center of Stockton. He has been board certified in the treatment and management of ocular disease since 1992. He worked with a prominent ophthalmologist in San Francisco for three years before relocating to Lodi to practice with Dr. John Demshar in Stockton in 1994. He practices general optometry with a focus on children's vision. He resides in Stockton with his wife, Christina.


Kurt Skinner, OD

Dr. Kurt R. Skinner, born and raised in Iowa and attended Iowa State University. He and his wife, Dr. Linda W. T. Hsu, received their Doctor of Optometry degrees from the Southern California College of Optometry in Fullerton in 1987. He graduated with honors as a member of Beta Sigma Kappa Academic Honor Fraternity. His optometric education included experience in several outreach clinical venues including the Center for the Partially Sighted in Santa Monica, California, Omni Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona, as well as the Medical Center at Norton Air Force Base.


Dr. Skinner has been in private practice in Stockton since 1987 along with his wife, Dr. Linda Hsu. He practices general family optometry with a strong emphasis on contact lenses including prescription and cosmetic fittings, as well as difficult fittings for astigmatism, bifocal needs, and corneas compromised by disease or trauma. He has been board certified in the treatment and management of ocular disease and has managed several types of surgical patients, including corneal transplants, cataract surgeries, radial keratotomy, photo-refractive keratectomy (PRK), and laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK).


John Fujii, OD

Dr. John K. Fujii, a native of Stockton, received his Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from University of California, Davis in 1987. Dr. Fujii went on to receive his Doctor of Optometry from the University of Houston, College of Optometry in 1991.

He holds active membership with the American Optometric Association, and the California Optometric Association where he volunteers as its Membership Chair. Dr. Fujii has also served as a past president for the San Joaquin Optometric Society. He, along with the officers of the San Joaquin Optometric Society, help to spearhead the development of "The Eye Exhibit" at the Children's Museum of Stockton.

Outside of his profession, Dr. Fujii currently serves as an appointee to the San Joaquin County Children and Families First Commission, and as active president of the Stockton chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League, (JACL). He also has served as a board member, youth advisor, and as a youth basketball coach for his local church. He resides in Stockton with his wife Angelina and his baby daughter, Elyse.


Linda W. T. Hsu, OD

Dr. Linda Wei Tsen Hsu attended the University of California at Davis. She received her degrees in Visual Science and Doctor of Optometry along with her husband, Dr. Kurt R. Skinner, from the Southern California College of Optometry in 1987. During her optometric education she was involved extensively with the Community Health Visual Outreach Program. Her internship experience was obtained at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Brentwood, Los Angeles, and at the Fort Ord Army Clinic.


Her diverse knowledge of patient management in all aspects of eye care evolves from working at the Sunnyvale Medical Clinic, seeing patients in a private ophthalmological practice, as well as managing patients in her optometric practice. She is board certified in the treatment and management of ocular disease.


Dr. Hsu is first-generation American and has a Chinese (Mandarin) background.She has been active in the community and has volunteered for vision screenings including the Su Salud Health Fairs.


Judith A. Prima, OD, FAAO

Dr. Judith Reddick Prima is a native of San Francisco but was raised in Stockton, attending and graduating from Stockton Unified Schools. She attended the University of California at Davis and the University of California at Berkeley School of Optometry.


Dr. Prima began practicing in Stockton in 1975 and joined Dr. Craig Hisaka in 1977 as his first associate in this now large group practice. Dr. Prima taught for over ten years in the General and Contact Lens Clinics at the School of Optometry in Berkeley. She also taught the introductory fitting laboratory in contact lenses. Her professional interests include contact lenses and public health practice. She is a member of several professional organizations including the American Academy of Optometry and the American Public Health Association.


Dr. Prima currently divides her time between her practice of general, primary care optometry and her family. She has been active in a number of organizations here in Stockton and Lodi where she lives with her two children.


Kathy Tran, OD, FAAO

Dr. Tran was born and raised in the South Bay. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA with a Bachelor’s degree in 2000. During her time at Pacific, she was a member of the women’s volleyball team as a defensive specialist (1996-2000) under Coach John Dunning. She received her optometry degree from the University of California, Berkeley School of Optometry with honors, Beta Sigma Kappa in 2005. She then completed a residency at the University of California, Berkeley in Cornea-Contact Lens with a secondary in Ocular Disease.

In addition to primary care, Dr. Tran is experienced in refractive surgery co-management and specialty contact lens fitting, including, astigmatism, multifocal, keratoconic, post-surgical, pediatric, cosmetic, and orthokeratology/Corneal Refractive Therapy lenses. Dr. Tran currently serves on faculty as a Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of California, Berkeley School of Optometry in the Contact Lens Clinic and Refractive Surgery Center.

Dr. Tran is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and a member of the American Optometric Association including the Contact Lens and Cornea Section and California Optometric Association. She has been involved in the Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity (V.O.S.H.) and has made humanitarian missions to other countries to provide eye care.

Leila Chow, OD

Dr. Chow was raised in San Francisco and attended UC Berkeley for both her undergraduate and optometry education. She received her optometry degree from UC Berkeley School of Optometry in 1990 and an MBA from California State University, Hayward in 2001. Dr. Chow is the Executive Director for Lions In Sight, a Lions Club project, which collects donated eyeglasses and conducts 10 – 12 humanitarian eyecare clinic missions to developing nations each year. Dr. Chow also volunteers at the annual Community Health Fairs in Stockton and Concord, CA. She resides in Brentwood, CA with her husband and daughter.
