Mary Branham ("Polly"
Branham) and John Calvin Burchett
As with Margaret Branham, our
information about Polly's relationship to George Branham and her marriage
to John Calvin Burchett come from George's will, which
identifies her as John's widow. We know that John was a
relatively prosperous landowner who had property in both
Clinton County and in Tennessee; Clinton County deed
records also identify him as a sheriff for the county.
He was the son of Icil Burchett and his wife Elizabeth
Henry.
In 1850, the family is enumerated in Overton County, TN,
living between Richard Brannum (60, b. NC) and his wife
Sarah (60, b. MD) and P.A. Brannum (20, b. TN) and his
wife, Martha (16, b. TN); it is possible that this Richard
is George Branham's brother, but we have no further data to
either support or discard that possibility at the moment.
After John's death in 1869, Polly largely remained in
Clinton County (although we have not yet found her in
census records in 1870); in the 1880 census, she is
identified as a "cripple," but we don't know exactly what
her infirmity was. Both John and Polly are buried in the
Icil Burchett Cemetery in Clinton County, as is their
daughter Margaret Burchett and son John Tyler Burchett.
As with the other Branhams, our research is continuing in
court and other records. As more becomes available, we will
post it here.
