Martha Rowland and
James Underwood
(back to main Rowland page)
Martha Ann
Rowland was born
around 1817 in Tennessee and married James Underwood
on 5 September 1834 in
Rutherford County. In the 1836 and 1837 tax records for
Rutherford County, James is included in the listings for
District 12. A Martha Underwood was listed in Rutherford
County's tax rolls for 1849; she owned no land and was
charged for one poll, but this Martha appears to be a
different person, possibly the widow of Levi S. Underwood.
In the 1860 census, a household headed by M. Underwood
(female), aged 35, was enumerated seven houses away from
Mary Jane (Rowland) Underwood in Civil District 12. It is
possible that this is Martha and her children, but we are
by no means sure.
In 1880, a James and Martha Underwood are enumerated in
Dade County, Missouri, along with a 21-year-old step-niece,
Emeline Newman. James was born in 1814 in Tennessee, and
Martha was born in 1817, also in Tennessee. Next door is a
household headed by Harvey Underwood, born 1844 in
Tennessee; his household includes wife Nancy (b 1847 in
MO), and children Mary (10), Hubert (8), Elbert (6), and
Walter (2), all born in Missouri. It is unclear at this
point whether this is the same family as the Rutherford
Underwoods.
