Littleberry Rowland and Jane Brown
(back to main Rowland
page)
Littleberry
Rowland (or Little Berry Rowland, as it was often
spelled) was born around 1812 in Virginia and died in
August 1899 in Rutherford County, TN. He married
Jane Brown (nicknamed "Jincey") in
Rutherford County probably around 1834, although no
marriage record has been found (the state did not require
them until 1837). Jane was the daughter of Lent Brown and Nancy Caroline Windrow;
she was born around 1811 and died around 1863/64 in
Rutherford County. Littleberry then married
Sarah Ann Winsett on 27 September 1865
in Rutherford County; Sarah was born in February 1823 in
Tennessee and died in early July 1902, when her estate
was probated by her son-in-law, William H. Haynes. Sarah
was the daughter of Silas Winsett and Sarah Freeman.
Littleberry and Sarah had no children of their own.
Littleberry spent most of his childhood and his entire
adult life in Rutherford County. He first appears as a head
of household in the 1840 census; in addition to his wife
and one daughter (aged 5-10), Littleberry's household
included one male (aged 15-20), possibly a brother. In 1850
and 1860, he is enumerated in the May District of
Rutherford County, along with Jane and his two children,
Louisa and Elias. In 1870 and 1880, Berry and Sarah Ann
Rowland are listed; daughter Louisa and her family live
nearby in 1880. In 1900, the widowed Sarah lived with her
stepdaughter and son-in-law.
Littleberry first appears in Rutherford County deed records
in 1857, when he used 49 acres as collateral for a $145.76
loan from Devereaux Jarrett; in that deed, he indicates
that he had received the land from George W. Crick in 1854
(the original deed book containing the transaction has been
lost). In the years that followed, he purchased 4 acres
from Nancy Floyd (1869, DB16:551), 17 acres from John C.
and Nancy C. Jones (1869, DB 16:609), and land from J.J.
Winsett (1871, DB18:67 -- full deed not yet reviewed or
abstracted). When he died intestate in 1899, his widow
Sarah and surviving child, Louisa J. Haynes sold two tracts
of land that Littleberry had owned, one containing 89 acres
and the other containing nearly 117 acres.
According to Rutherford County's tax rolls for 1849,
Littleberry (marked in the rolls as "S.B. Rowlan") owned no
land and was charged for one poll. By 1867, however,
Littleberry was taxed on 120 acres of land valued at
$1,400, paying a total of $9.00 in tax that year.
Littleberry was a farmer and the 1850 agricultural census
reports that he owned $6 of farm implements; 3 horses; 6
other cattle; 4 sheep; 13 swine; $263 of livestock; 13
bushels of wheat; 200 bushels of Indian corn; 50 bushels of
corn; 2 400-lb bales of ginned cotton; 10 bushels of Irish
potatoes; 15 bushels of sweet potatoes; 75 lbs of butter;
$10 of household manufacture; $5 of animals slaughtered.
(We need to figure out what this says about the size of his
farm compared to others!) According to the 1860 census,
Littleberry owned $700 of real estate and $400 of personal
property.
