James A. Houlihan and
Gussie E. Kelly
James Anthony Houlihan was the
fourth son of Bartholomew and Johanna Houlihan.
According to his obituary in the Oakland Tribune, James
moved from Worcester to San Francisco in 1907, settling
ultimately in Alameda County. He joined the Tribune
staff in 1910 and ultimately became its automobile
editor in 1918, a job he held until 1923 when he
established an advertising agency.
His wife, Gussie Kelly, was born San Francisco in June
1886, and quite probably lived through the great San
Francisco earthquake of 1906. Her mother was Myna (or
Minnie) Schlutius, who may be the daughter of Herman and
Augusta Schlutius, who emigrated to the United States from
Germany (possibly Prussia). We do not know the first name
of Gussie's father; her parents had not yet married by the
1880 census, and by 1900, her father had apparently already
died.
At the time of his death in 1946, James had 14 nephews and
nieces, including John F. Houlihan, Jr., who had moved to
California in January 1946 to work with his uncle in the ad
agency.
