Richard
Gough and Julia Ryon/Ryan
Richard Gough was the first
child of Peter and Letitia Gough to be born in the
United States; according to his obituary, he was born in the
village of Beaver Meadows, which is just over the line
in Carbon County. He apprenticed as a tailor with his
older brother, John, in Philadelphia, appearing there in
the 1860 census with John and his wife, Susan; they
lived at #2 Nonnater's Court (a street that apparently
no longer exists). After the Civil War broke out,
however, he and John returned to the Hazleton area,
where Richard married Julia Ryon in 1867 at St.
Gabriel's church. We do not know the name of Julia's
father, but her mother was Susan (b. 1807, Ireland - d
after 1880); two of her sisters were Mary and Bridget.
Richard and Julia had five children, but by 1900 all but
one had died; we only know the names of two -- Peter Joseph
and Elizabeth -- who were both baptized at St. Gabriel's.
Richard and Julia appear to have had a tumultuous home
life, probably made more difficult by the deaths of their
four children. In 1870, they were enumerated in Hazleton,
but by 1880 had separated. While we have not yet located
Julia in the census, Richard was living in the Hazleton
area, while their son Peter was living with his aunt --
Julia's sister -- in Schuylkill County, where he was
enrolled in school.
By 1885, when Richard died, Julia and son Peter had moved
to Philadelphia, where Peter also took up the tailoring and
upholstery trade. After Peter married around 1897, Julia
continued to live with her son and his young family, along
with her unmarried sister, Bridget Ryan.
